The Queen's Hill Camp Analysis
How could you imagine there are many big and beautiful ruins of Hong Kong such a tiny city? Located in Fanling, The Queen’s Hill Camp has been one of the biggest ruins of the city for more than fourteen years. Sing Chan, the ruins photographer from Rufization sharing with us his journey in seek of abandoning places in Hong Kong and beyond. Ruins are often portrayed as scary and creepy, however, its creepy has become kind of beauty under cameras.

While the government has troubles finding lands for housing and other developments, there are many urban places abandoned and ready for any developments. It had been used by the British Army before 1997. In 2010, the government invited an education organisation to establish a private institution in that area. However, the estimated cost of this project is HKD 1 billion, which is not affordable for the organisation. Then in 2015, the government planned to redevelop the land as a housing estate, but the plan still not confirmed.

The ruins photographer, Sing Chan, brought me to The Queen’s Hill Camp, where is far away from the center of Fanling. We took a taxi at the Fanling MTR station, it takes around 20 minutes to go there. The camp is close to hiking trails and some houses. While departure, you could find it surrounded by broken fence.

Stepped inside the camp, was like stepping back to 1970s, there are British barracks, police offices, restaurants and playgrounds, both are full of dust and weeds, suggesting how long they have been abandoned. Even more, there is a historical Indian temple, which established in 1960s and was defined as Grade 3 historical building by the Antiquities Advisory

The development of The Queen’s Hill Camp is one of the samples. This place was wasted for long. If it became a public housing estate, it would help thousands poor citizens for living.” he added.

As well as The Queen’s Hill Camp, Tai Mo Shan, the highest peak in Hong Kong, located at the center of New territories, also found abandoned British Army barracks. Those barracks are not as much as those located at The Queen’s Hill Camp, but as the same, they have been abandoned for years. The Development Bureau commented, there is not any development plan in those areas.

Chan Kim Ching, the member of the Liber Research Community, said that the community has been asking the government to release the lists of abandon places in order to calculate how much land could be used, however, the government didn’t respond. He criticized, the government is responsible to let citizens recognize the lists, and the land planning nowadays is not good enough, some of the abandon places wasted while waiting to develop.

Tse Wai Chuen, the chairman of panel on development of the legislative council, claimed that it was difficult to develop those abandon places, the government needs to consider local situations. Though, he agreed that The Queen’s Hill Camp should be developed as soon as
