The Qualities Of Haymitch Abernay's Catching Fire
Haymitch Abernathy is from Hunger Games, and he is the Katniss and Peeta's assigned mentor. He is a raging alcoholic who seems not to care if they live or die in the arena. But it's also immediately clear that there's more to Haymitch. In the series, we the audience learns that Haymitch is the only District 12 victor in Hunger Games history, winning the 50th Quarter Quell when he was only 16 years old. He drinks to cope with the trauma, and he is resistant to having a close relationship with Katniss and Peeta because he has watched some many of his tributes like 48 of them die in the arena. Some of Haymitch’s qualities makes him a harder character to admire but once the audience learns about his back story then he is more likable because he …show more content…
His family seemed to receive the raft of Snow due to his victor. Katniss seems to pull off the same stunt in Catching Fire, and the only reason her family aren't slaughtered in retribution is that the Capitol has bigger fish to fry, what with the revolution and all. Another quality of why the audience likes Haymitch so much is that he knows how to work the system and helps Katniss and Peeta.
The bond that develops between Haymitch and Katniss is rooted in their similarities. Being able to spot those similarities in Katniss is what inspires Haymitch to give a damn again, and to become the mentor she needs. Once the audience sees how similar Haymitch and Katniss are, they tend to become more like hearted toward Haymitch.
Haymitch goes through alcohol withdrawal so intense that Katniss is afraid that he might die. He went cold turkey from years of alcohol addiction in the name of a greater good. With Haymitch going through alcohol withdrawal to become a mentor for Katniss the audience emotions go out to him because he is better himself, something that the audience knows is a big step for anyone to live a better life. A lot of people may have experienced a scenario like that. A lot of the scenarios that Haymitch has gone through makes the audience love Haymitch Abernathy an antihero in the Hunger

“May the odds be forever in your favor,” were the last words she heard before being sent away to the Capitols entertainment battlefield. “…Quote from Caesar Flickerman about them winning at the end…..” said Caesar Flickerman, the host of the Hunger Games television show in a cheerful voice though peopled had just been slaughtered all in the name of entertainment. Little do the people of the Capitol know, Katniss’ love for Peeta could have been all for show, because her heart has secretly been left at home with her boyfriend, Gale Hawthorne. In the beginning it appears as though Gale Hawthorne is Katniss’ only love; however, upon volunteering herself as tribute in place of her sister, she grows closer to a bakery boy from her same district, who had been in love with her ever since the moment he laid eyes on her, and realizes the significance of each and how each helps her succeed in the Games. Both Tom and Katniss use their families as their motivation to keep fighting through the tough times although along the way some of their family members do not make it. These stories also contain the underlying theme that is, corrupted establishments lead to rebellion. They both end up revolting against corrupted establishments, in Grapes of Wrath it is the Californian’s, whereas in The Hunger Games Katniss is fighting the capitol. As I said in the beginning self-preservation has been a large theme in these books.…

Peeta is head over heels in love with Katniss, so obviously he knows how to treat Katniss like a princess, to make her feel special. Since Peeta is the baker’s son in District 12, he’s strong, because he carries around bags of flour, so he can help Katniss around. Also, he can make bread, decorate cakes, or paint pictures (his talent discovered in the Capitol) as a living, where Gale, only knows how to hunt illegally, which isn’t very effective. Now that Gale works in the coal mines, there’s a chance that he can die, so it wouldn’t so good if Katniss loses Gale if she picks him. Peeta was with Katniss throughout most of the Hunger Games, so he would understand her more, and he was with her during darkest times, so she would feel safe whenever she’s with him. Peeta is a very smart and wise man, because he camouflaged in the Hunger Games to not get hurt even more, when he’s already badly injured. He’s also wise, because when him and Katniss were sitting on the roof, he said how he didn’t just want to be a piece in the Capitol’s game (The Hunger Games), and wanted to die as himself, not as a monster. This made Katniss think about what he said, and that would help if she needed any advice in the future. He respects everyone’s opinion, and cares about others around him. For example, when Katniss talked to Peeta about running away with her family, Gale’s family, Haymitch, and himself, Peeta wasn’t so negative about knowing that Gale was running away with them. Unlike Peeta, Gale wasn’t too happy about finding out that Peeta was running away with…

Being at that the Capitol, also meant that she alone could not provide for her family anymore. Being the head of the household, and then being ripped away for the family had a devastating effect on Katniss’s family. Being at the capital also meant that that she was always under surveillance, and everything she did was being watched. The motivation that Katniss showed through her actions is away that I am when helping others, or in a bad situation. Not once in the movie did I see her give up on anything, even if she had gotten hurt really bad. Being friends with people who are challenging and inspiring can inevitably affect a person’s life. In Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games and Catching Fire, the main character Katniss Everdeen enlisted to fight in the Hunger Games, where children from twelve to eighteen have to survive and battle each other to death. The beginning of the dystopian novels is set in District 12, a city in the country Panem. Probably the strongest characteristic of Haymitch is that he is a rebel. Haymitch openly drinks and doesn’t really care what the Capitol think about his behavior. He also announces that Katniss has more guts than anyone when Katniss volunteers, a message directed to the Capitol during the televised reaping. Haymitch loves it when he learns that Katniss shot the arrow at the group rating the tributes, a defiant act Effie…
