The Quad
The building I chose is Bingham Humanities Building on campus. The building is located across from Ekstrom Library and next to Life Sciences Building. In the center of all of them is what is called “The Quad.” The Quad is space separating the buildings by trees, grass, and sidewalks. Bingham, like the rest of the two buildings were built with similar architecture style. These styles included square like boxes with mini wing square box projecting out of the main building - The building has three floors and a basement. These projections do have some effect to the design. One reason maybe for the appearance and the other is to block rain or sunlight from above. If a person was to guess what the building looks like from sky view, they would most …show more content…
This is because of the color and the design of the building. The building has about two different color code. One is the red brick color and the other is the light toned stones. The lighter color stones are used to separate the floors of the building from the outside view. Thus, viewers from the outside can get a better idea of how many floors there are and where does next floor starts. This allows viewers to get a sense of how high each floor and how wide. Therefore, visitors can get a sense of the proportions before entering the building. When it comes to chiaroscuro the building does not a strong chiaroscuro effect. The reason is the building are made of squares and are mainly flat. However, there are spots like under the projected parts of the building that shows chiaroscuro. These projections, for the most part, are located on the top of the building. Thus, chiaroscuro in this case casts shadow below the projected …show more content…
I would say the overall experience at University of Louisville is great because of the humanities building. I would not want anything else, this building is great as it is. On a daily base, I spent half of my day inside this building. For other students, I would think the same because I see students after class hanging around the building. They could be at the first floor or outside siting by the building. If they dislike this building, they would not be around. Bingham is a special building located in a special spot, I do not think other buildings would do better than Bingham

Beeby's proposal focused primarily on avoiding anything Mies; that is, people were tired of the numerous knockoffs of Mies's steel and glass towers, so rather than creating a new style of architecture anything unlike Mies seemed to be acceptable. The exterior of the building is nothing more than a curtain wall of granite and brick. Rather than being true to the building's skeletal structure, Beeby chose to cover the façade with granite blocks at the base and brick on the rest of the building. The choice of materials was actually chosen for its durability and low maintenance, however unnecessary they might be. The building seems to have been designed on a gargantuan scale, feeling imposing rather than impressive upon approaching it. The massive five-story, arched windows were meant to reflect Roman architecture, a reference that gets lost in the mix of many architectural styles referenced by the…

Throughout many centuries, architects have argued about whether a building should be created in a rational or in a sensory way. The architects who believed in rational beauty did buildings with an order. They used shapes to create their buildings. This building reflected the structures of Ancient Greece and Rome. On the other hand, architects who believed in sensory beauty designed visually attractive structures. These buildings reflected back to the Middle Ages. I believe that the Colorado State Capitol building is beautiful because of the way it shows the values of a rational architect. The architects who designed this building created a sense of beauty by making all its parts communicate and by its symmetry. Last of all this building expresses the values of power, democracy and sophistication.…

When that’s done, rarely are the points discussed on an apples-to-apples basis. Your thesis & your conclusion will be that one of them is the more successful design, based on your research and objective analysis of each.…

The Dome that rests atop Beardshear Hall was almost never a part of Iowa States’ architectural wonders as it was removed from the original budget due to a lack of funding. Beardshear Hall has a very rich history that dates back to over a century ago. Beardshear Hall has been an integral part on campus even before it was fully completed, housing multiple programs, which were eventually transferred to other buildings, as more administrative space was needed. The story of Beardsheer hall unfortunately starts with not one but two great tragedies in Iowa State Universities’ architectural history.…

The Florida Southern College campus is home to the world 's largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. In 1938 Dr. Ludd Spivery, the president of Florida Southern College, came to Wright for both his philosophy and architecture in hopes of building a “college of tomorrow.” Wright designed the following 9 buildings: Annie Pfieffer chapel, Buckner Building (Original Roux Library), Ordway Building (Originally called the Industrial Arts Building), Danforth Chapel, Polk County Science Building (Called Polk Science by faculty and students), Watson/Fine Building (Administration Building), Water Dome, Three Seminars (Now the Business Office), and The Esplanades. It took about twenty years for the master plan to be fulfilled.…

    Cathedrals

I chose the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The design message of the Cathedral of Notre Dame was to find rest and safe haven from our lives through God. There are many reasons the building gives this message, such as, gargoyles, the height of the building, and the beautiful light shown through the cathedral. The gargoyles symbolize being safe, because the gargoyles are suppose to keep evil spirits and demons out of the cathedral. The height of the building symbolizes the little separation from the congregation and God. The only thing between the congregation and God is the roof. The roof was so high and weighed a lot that the architects had to make fly buttress to hold it up. The height shows that the cathedral was the closest thing to God. The light symbolizes the beautiful natural light coming from God throughout the cathedral. This comes…

Over the course of my college search, two main qualities have stood out to me in regards to where I want to spend my next four years: post-college opportunities and campus lifestyle. Many schools could have me set up to join the real world and find a decent job. Unfortunately in doing so, I would be forced to sacrifice the valuable life experiences and relationships that come with a great campus lifestyle. Others could provide me with those fun times and great memories, though they would be unable to prepare me for a career and life after college. With SMU however, I was able to find a perfect balance of what I'm looking for. I had the privilege of touring the Hilltop this fall and instantly fell in love with it. The breath-taking campus and…

It was the same old creaking two story, hard wood floored building my great grandparents went to when they were in high school, which was well over 50 years ago. I had wonderful teachers that taught me and other students the outside life of living on your own and educating us and preparing our eager young selves for college. I remember saying my sophomore year in high school, “I’m never going to college in Lewiston at LCSC. That is too close to home and I hate that valley!” It turned out to be one of the greatest decisions I’ve made upon graduating high school. My family, my teachers and LCSC brought me here today to study nursing in hopes to pursue my dreams and goals as a traveling…
