The Purpose of Literature
I believe that the purpose of literature is to educate, inform, entertain and give the author a chance to express them self. I know that when I read, it helps me to escape my own world sometimes and go somewhere else fun and exciting. I think that some literature is just meant to be entertaining while other literature can educate or inform also. I believe that older literature can be very educating and entertaining. It teaches me about the different writing styles and a hint of what life used to be like. Non-fiction literature informs me of what is happening in real life. It's also entertaining for me. I thoroughly enjoy reading literature that is just entertaining, such as fiction novels, because it is fun and it takes me to a different place. It's amazing to me that I still continue to learn something even when I'm reading for fun. I believe that literature is very important for education. It seems to me that illiteracy is a big problem in our country and I think that it's unnecessary because there are so many different types of literature to read that can be fun for all different types of people. Francine Prose’s, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, proves many points about literature and the effect it has on students. I agree with Prose in such a sense that I believe students should read literature, not to get a better understanding of the “behind-the-scenes” of the story, or because it was assigned to them, but because they want to read it and that they will actually read the story thoroughly, understand it, and apply it to themselves and their life. I have taken English classes where the literature is taught effectively, in a annotative sense, and we have learned what to look for in a novel, story, or other piece of literature, to determine the position of point of view the author has on a certain topic. We studied the author and the history of the context more than the context itself.…

Literature is one of the main ways people express themselves through. The stories being written serve to make the reader think and finish the book with having more knowledge than they did going in. Literature is full of messages that help the reader realize there’s more to this story and what the writer is trying to tell them. That the words written down are more than just what they say, they were deliberately put there by the writer trying to get the reader to understand. Literature use of themes helps people connect more to humanity and themselves.…

The Literate Arts could be used for self-expression. The literate arts are good for clearly expressing an artist’s deepest personal feelings. Writers who have trouble bringing out personal themes can do so effortlessly using this form of art. To be a good writer, the reader must be able to identify with your personal feelings in your work. In The Dark Night of the Soul, Miller expresses his feelings about different ideas, beliefs, doubts and what other feelings he has. Though he shows his doubts on the power of the literary arts, he uses the literary arts to express them. Ironic isn’t it? We were able to understand from his text how these different questions troubled him. Self-expression has been seen to be a very useful tool in life. It makes one avoid harming himself or the people around him. Although Miller gave an example of the Columbine shooting where the shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, were readers and writers of the literary arts and yet it made no difference in their lives, it doesn’t change my believe. He also added they even went as far as documenting what the felt before the shooting and why they did it but they still went about shooting people but I say that’s just an exception. In the movie…

Although I don’t always enjoy the material we are asked to read, it seems logical for it to be a part of our curriculum. I believe literature is useful in classrooms more than it is not of use. In my opinion, I think students should be exposed to diverse writing styles, be challenged with literature, and expand their knowledge as well as their comprehension.…
