Stricter gun laws should not be put in place because people feel safer owning a gun. Since it is impossible for our government to protect every family from every break in or every assault, it is necessary to own a gun. Even walking around on the street with a concealed carry firearm would make anyone feel safer. In fact, (1) states that implemented "shall-issue" concealed carry laws reduced murders by 8.5%. So not only does it make you feel protected, it also gives criminals a reason to not go after you. (2) Federal law already prohibits certain people from owning firearms: those with certain kinds of criminal records or mental illness; drug addicts; immigrants without legal status; veterans who left the military with a dishonorable discharge; and anyone with a permanent restraining order keeping them from a partner or a partner’s children.
