The Pros And Cons Of Onion
Have you ever cut into an onion and your eyes start to water and tears run down your face? Scientists have been studying this strange issue for decades. For over 40 years, scientists including Eric Block have been trying to figure out why cutting into an onion makes you “cry”. A chemical reaction occurs when you slice into the onion releasing a gas containing sulfur. This gas reacts with your eyes and forms small amounts of sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid causes the burning and eventually tears. The sulphur chemical that is formed is called lachrymatory factor or LF. Lachrymatory comes from the Latin word lacrima, which means tear. Eric Block hypothesized that enzymes speed up the chemical reaction when the onion’s skin is cut. Scientists

    The Onion Summary

    • 319 Words
    • 2 Pages

This article from The Onion addresses the way that today’s scientific research is conducted and makes fun of how the source of funding for an experiment can influence its results. Interpreted plainly, the article claims that a new step has been added the scientific method: after a hypothesis is made, funding must be found. Then, based on who is funding the research and the sponsor’s desire, researchers must then align their study so it gets the results the funders want. The organization in charge of this change further claims that a new step will be added in the future to take into account how profitable an experiment may be. The actual point the article is trying to make is that modern research is more driven by money than by science. Scientists…

In cooked beetroot, the water or food would become stained due to its leakage of betalin (the redish-purple pigment). Betalin is found in the vacuole of beetroot cell. The leakage may have been caused by something happening in the cell membrane of the beetroot – concerning the proteins embedded in the phospholipid layer. The study will require the experiment of different temperatures of water and to find out which in temperature causes the most leakage of the pigment and why it does this.…

    Catechol Oxidase Lab Report

In this lab, we studied the activity of an enzyme that is found in fruits and vegetables called catecholase or catechol oxidase. An enzyme is a protein molecule that is a catalyst. Catechol oxidase is the enzyme in fruits and vegetables that turns them that undesirable brownish color; also commonly referred to as bruising or bruised. When walking through your regular grocery store and you find yourself in the produce section, what is it that you look for before putting that produce in the bag for weighing? The size, the smell, the color? Most of us would have to say that if they grabbed an apple that had a bruised body, they would return that apple to the pile in search for that perfect skinned apple. This is why studying catechol oxidase is so important!…

While sitting outside on a sunny day, I saw bees flying around me. I quickly got up and started to walk away. I was a little angry they had ruined my peacefulness. I muttered to myself “I wish bees would die.” A few months later in my biology class, we had to read an article about Honeybees and how they pollinate. I was very interested in how these insects contribute to our world. In the article, it also mentioned about the bees vanishing. I instantly desired to get this important information out to everyone I knew. When people think of Honeybees, they may imagine memories of family picnics being interfered by these creatures just like I used to. Bees are feared by many and have some negative connotations. I want to educate these people and…

The hypothesis of cannabis as a starting drug is now rejected by science as a myth. Of course, smoking Marijuana is not entirely risk-free. Excessive consumption can lead to respiratory problems or difficulties in coping with everyday life. In very rare cases, cannabis can trigger a latent psychosis. However, numerous studies prove that cannabis is substantially less harmful than alcohol and tobacco. According to official data, in contrast to hemp, these legal drugs have claimed more than 100,000 deaths in the United States alone. On the other hand, not a single death is documented as a result of cannabis consumption.…
