The Pros And Cons Of Community College
After reading these articles it would have a person strongly thinking that education should be free. However, there are those like me that believe education should not be free. Thousands of students are accepted into college either because of their academic skills or for their talent skills. These students earn their way into college, so why should other students get their entrance into college “handed” to them? That is very unfair to those who fight hard every day to earn their way. In article one NYT: Free College it discusses that in fact, President Obama’s plan for students to go to Community College for free. Although they discuss the pros of this plan they do not seem to point out the cons, such as the cost of this plan or who would

With President Obama getting ready to leave office and the 2016 presidential campaign that's been going on we have more than often heard the question Should community college be free? President Obama came fourth with the idea of making community college free and as we have seen some people including presidential candidates like Bernie Sander support this, however not everyone agrees that this is a good idea. The hope that President Obama has with making community college free is that more people will be encouraged to go out and get their degree. As we often see more students who have graduated high school tend to go to work rather than continuing going to school and part of the reason for this is that these kids don't want to be in debt. Making…

I have read two articles based on the idea of free college education, one being for the concept and the other against it. After reading both sides of the arguments, I side against free college education. First of all, the article against free education states nothing in life is free. It’s physically impossible to be providing high quality education for less than a penny. Therefore, the money would have to come from somewhere. If it isn’t going to be the students taking care of their responsibilities, it’s going to end up being the taxpayers. They already pay for substantial grants and scholarships awarded to students each year. It is unfair to place this burden on the general population. In the article for free education, they had stated how…

Paying for community college can be a handful for some. While many can pay for college with financial aid, however a many students argue that they can’t afford to pay off tuition or the cost of books and material because it’s too expensive and they don’t attend community college. This is a serious issue for many people that want to earn a degree in a particular majors. Obama promotes the idea that community college should be free to attend and take class without the burden of paying for tuition or the overwhelming cost that students fear. With that statement gain more of an outcry of students agreeing on the idea and many others opposing of it. In the article by Joanne Jacobs, “As He Promotes It, Some Question Obama’s Free Community College Idea,” she discusses that there are pros and cons to both arguments.…

College education being free, has been a topic that many debates, or come across often. Several countries do provide free college education, but this system won’t work in the United States especially in the highly populated regions. Therefore, making Community Colleges free, our taxes will rise, we will have overcrowded classrooms, and underpaid professors, all leading to poor quality of education. As stated by Mary Clare Amselem in her article ‘Free Community College is a bad deal for taxpayers and students’ , community colleges generally have a poor academic rate. Consequently, the education level for job employment will also increase.…

If one looks at the data, the bigger problem is that many students don’t finish college. “Only about 55 percent of students graduate six years after starting,” Bob Luebke (a writer for the Civitas Institute.) The problem is not access but completion. So why do people drop out of college? For the most part, money is not the biggest problem; it’s usually factors like family issues, or transportation. Providing free tuition to institutions that graduate only a small amount over 50 percent of their students does not make economic sense. Also, if college tuition does become free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and will most likely drop out as well as more students that will major in fields with little or no market…

When someone says free, nobody assumes money. People consider America, or the right to speak freely without worry, not free college. To brand something that costs so much now as free would be quite a large task. “That’s why I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college – to zero”, former President Barrack Obama stated in his speech on free tuition. He states that college can cost nothing to anyone, but free will never be free. Credit is not given, only earned. Increasing the already insatiable amount of taxes that American citizens pay for is just the beginning. Lowering the quality of education received when there are thousands of new students going to institutions just for the reason that it is free. Higher education will be suffering in numerous ways, including: increased quantity of students, reduced salary once a degree is attained, not to mention a higher percentage of scholars dropping out. The first two years of college should not be “free.”…

People who have potential and the knowledge to go to college and make a difference won't be able to do so if they don't have the money. In Europe, some colleges and top universities are free! People like Leonardo Da Vinci, attended colleges in Europe. People should all have equal opportunities and should be able to pursue their dreams. If colleges were free, who knows what the world might have invented today. Maybe a cure for cancer? Or a new object that can better our daily lives. But we won't know since colleges are not…

This legislation Bernie Sanders is attempting to pass is attracting countless young adults that are striving to get an education, which creates this topic to be extremely controversial and popular within both the Democratic and Republican population in America today. “The bill would eliminate the $70 billion dollar tuition costs at all 4-year public colleges and universities” and “lower interest rates on federal student loans, give graduates a chance to refinance existing loans at lower rates, and stop the government from making profits on student loans,” which is basically like hitting the jackpot to all the young people seeking an education, but couldn’t afford to. As simple as it may seem, free college may come with conflict. The conflict…

Further, nothing is truly free. Were college free to all students, someone would still have to pay those bills. Public education is already the single largest expense of non-federal governments and a huge part of the federal expense. Increasing the scope of free public education would also significantly increase the costs involved - those costs must be borne by someone. So, you either pay for it now as tuition or you pay for it for the rest of your life in the form of taxes but either way, you'll pay for it.…
