The product lifecycle of Coca-Cola

Product lifecycle is the process of product goes through from development to withdrawal from the market. There are five stages in the lifecycle: development, introduction, growth, maturity and decline.

I would like to use an example of Coca-Cola. Here is its mission statement. “To create value and make a difference…everywhere we engage.”(Baines, Fill and Page, 2008, p177)

Coca-Cola is a widely known enterprise all over the world, the success of which is obvious to all. From its mission statement we can find that the core philosophy of Coca-Cola relates to the mass-market share (“everywhere we engage”) and extension strategies (“create value and make a difference”) in the maturity stage.

This is the lifecycle of Coca-Cola. According to the graph, the rate of sales development and introduction of Coca-Cola is faster than any other stages. In 1885, Dr.John.Stith.Pemberton invited the first Coca-Cola, which sold only $0.05. But two lawyers leaded the formal introduction. They came up with the innovative business cooperation model and change the bottling system, followed all the demands strictly. Owing to the unique bottling system, the factories that produce Coca-Cola flourished everywhere. As a result, the proper promotion and price won vast market share, and laid the foundation for future development.

In 1923, the sales of Coca-Cola increased rapidly and the corporation enter the booming growth stage. Robert W. Woodruff, who was the CEO of Coca-Cola, suggested, “no matter when and where customers are, if they need, we provide. ” He also stressed that Coca-Cola must hold the market share by adding penetrating retail outlets. The price promotion of Coca-Cola was especially famous in the Second World War. Woodruff ensured that each American soldier could spend 5 cents to buy a bottle of Coke anywhere of the world regardless how much the production cost was.     In 1886, John Pemberton who was an Atlanta pharmacist came up with a caramel-colored liquid and then he carried it over to Jacob’s Pharmacy. Once at the pharmacy the mixture was combined with carbonated water. Later on they put the mixture to the test by letting the customers at the pharmacy try it out and it was a success. They then started to sell the new concoction for only five cents a glass. The new refreshing drink was named Coca-Cola, the name was given by Frank Robison, who happened to be Pemberton’s book keeper. From 1888-1891 Asa Griggs Candler from Atlanta, Georgia secured the rights to Coca-Cola for about $2,300 and he then later became the company’s first president. By 1895, Asa G. Candler had build plants throughout the country in cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, and Chicago. In 1894, Joseph Bidenharm was the first person to put Coca-Cola in a bottle and he sent the idea to Candler, but it did not have much success. Five years later Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead secured the rights to bottle and sell Coca-Cola for only a dollar. Later on in 1923, Robert Woodruff became Coca-Cola’s president after his father Ernest Woodruff, who had purchased the company, had passed away. Robert Woodruff then spent about 60 years globalizing Coca-Cola. Then after 70 years of success, Coca-Cola decided to incorporate new flavors: Fanta, Sprite, TAB and Fresca. In 1960, Coca-Cola bought the Minute Maid Company adding juices to the company. A few years later in the 1980’s Roberto C. Golzueta became the chairman of the Board of Directors and the CEO of the company. He organized numerous US bottling operations into Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. and he also introduced diet coke. In 1990 new beverages were introduced to the company and by 1997, Coca-Cola would sell 1 billion servings of its products every day.
