The Process Of Crisis Intervention
In the module I learned that crisis intervention is not an easy task. “Crisis intervention refers to the methods used to offer immediate, short-term help to individuals who experience an event that produces emotional, mental, physical, and behavioral distress or problems”(). The process of crisis intervention was best understood by me when i found the SAFER-R Individual Crisis Intervention Roadmap. This breaks down crisis intervention into five steps: Stabilize, Acknowledge, Facilitate understanding, Encourage adaptive coping, and Restore functioning or refer. Stabilize includes: assessing the impact of the situation on the victim, and Building a trust relationship by providing your undivided attention and assistance. The acknowledgement step …show more content…
This can be done by attributing their reactions to the situation, not that they have a personal weakness. The fourth step is encouraging the victims to cope adaptively. Support person in exploring their own coping, Pastoral Interventions, or seeking professional help. The last and final step in the process is Restoring independent function or referal. For this step follow up with the individual after the initial meeting, be empathetic, and reinforce that they will be taken care of. If needed refer them to a agency or resource that will benefit their needs.
Across the nation there are many agencies and resources for victims and crisis intervention. There is an agency in existence that will help with just about anything relating to victimology. A primary goal for these agencies and resources is to, “assist to help them through an unimaginable period of their life” ("Victim Assistance Program video", 2010). There are agencies that assist victims of sexual abuse, child sexual abuse, physical abuse, theft, stalking, terrorism, and as far as even human trafficking. These agencies provide services such as: criminal justice support, crisis counseling, sheltering, group treatment, transportation, emergency financial

The human service program that is currently in development is the Border Basic Needs Agency. The agency is will target women victims of sexual and domestic violence to attend to specific needs and allow them to begin to restructure their lives. Many times victims of sexual and domestic violence are forced to be separated from their loved ones, and have limited access to basic needs. This could include shelter, food, clothing, and job placement services. There are several agencies that help with treatment and education, but our service will be geared to getting victims back to some sense of normalcy. When families are ripped apart by sexual and family violence, they are at times left without anything because of the situation they were placed into. Our agency will provide shelters or foster homes to those left without a place to stay. They will also be provided with food, clothing and job placement…

“The foundation of crisis intervention is the development of rapport—a state of understanding and comfort—between client and counselor” (Kanel, 2006 p.70). This stage is so important that no real work can be accomplished before it is established. A person needs to feel understood and validated before they are comfortable enough to open up to you. Some of the skills necessary for this stage are basic attending skills, questions, paraphrasing, reflection of feelings, and summarizations. “The primary purpose of using the basic attending skills is to gain a clear understanding of the internal experience of the crisis as the client sees it” (Kanel, 2006 p. 70). First and foremost, this begins with listening. This is not to be confused with hearing. You really need to listen. You want to show the client that you are completely there for them by maintaining eye contact, using a soft, soothing voice, and have attentive body language (sitting close and having a relaxed posture). The questions you choose to ask are also important. Close ended questions generally require short answers like “yes” and “no”. These are generally only used to answer factual information. Using open ended questions allows for the client to open up and reveal their true feelings. “When the question is posed effectively, it helps move the interview along and allows gathering essential information about the nature of the crisis” (Kanel, 2006 p. 73). Paraphrasing is also an essential skill. This is done by either restating to the client what it is that you thought you heard, or by using the clarifying technique which is just asking a question that would clarify the information just given by the client. “The intent is to encourage elaboration of the statements to let the client know that you, the counselor, have understood or heard the message; to help the client…

How does this client manage sexual abuse, child abuse, delinquency and crime? None of these must be taken lightly. If a child is bullied, the social worker and the police will be included. The social worker will is required to visit the victim and his or her family. If abuse is proven, therefore, the child will be terminated from the house and placed in a foster home. The parents will now lose custody and be charged with child neglect in the appropriate procedures. Sexual abuse is also gravely serious. When a report regarding sexual abuse happens, the police are also included. The criminal is charged and arrested into custody. If it is a child, they can be provided advice, counseling and regular checkups. Crime is also managed in a common way. The courts and police will be included, therefore the time is provided to the person who committed the crime. It revolves on the graveness of the crime itself. The Child Abuse Protection Association is one of the best organizations in Missouri. They build families to become stronger and help families heal together. They help individuals, families, and society to learn more about the effects of child abuse and neglect. They teach them how to know if it is happening and who you need to let know. This is exceptionally wonderful for children because it can help them have a better understand of what abuse and neglect really are. The child death rate in Missouri has dropped 15% within the last seven years. I think the more people are aware that abuse and neglect happen every day the more we try to help prevent it from happening.…
