The Primary sector is the sector within the economy is the direct use of natural resources which includes fishing, oil, mining, forestry, gas and farming. This sector within the UK has never really been a high sector in order to make products and services as in 1970 it was 3% and in 2013 1% and therefore is decreasing and will soon not be used at all. The main reason the primary sector is decreasing within the United Kingdom is due to the absence of raw materials as a result of the exhaustion of primary resources which the country has, they therefore import from other countries. It is cheaper to import raw materials from other countries than it is to actually produce them in the UK, however finding new resources within the UK is becoming difficult and much more expensive; this is why the UK imports so much of its raw materials from other countered that are more developed. This is because it is not so expensive to produce them in these countries. Another reason why it has decreased is because the primary sector includes the more traditional areas such as fishing, coal mining and farming which aren’t as popular anymore within the UK due to the environmental changes. Within this change, the UK also declined in employment in the primary sector as only 2% of English workers are employed in this sector.
