When I was younger my grandfather would take me to the pond and we would sit there for hours and just connect with nature. My grandfather was a man of mystery he grew up without knowing his biological parents as he was adopted. When he was 18 he joined the Marines and was shipped off to Vietnam. While there he was in charge of the men and controlled the radio.…

In order to be effective, a leader must have an unwavering passion for their projects. I have found through my time with The Pink Bowz, the more excited I become about something, the more excited everyone else becomes. However, when a leader loses enthusiasm for what they are doing, they set a bad example for their peers. I have personally failed as a leader before because I developed apathy towards a project, and my teammates began to adopt the same attitude.…

After Big Sur and spending the night in Pacifica we went further north to San Francisco. When we spent the night in Pacifica our hotel was right near the ocean. It was such a beautiful view to wake up to. I just absolutely love the sound of the ocean. In San Francisco we went over the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a pretty cool thing to see with the views of San Francisco and the ocean. We then went to the park across from the Painted Ladies. The Painted Ladies are the houses that appear in the background of the opening of the original Full House series. It was an awesome thing to go see as I grew up watching Full House and will still watch it from time to time. Once we were done at the park we went to the San Francisco Giants stadium. Although…

Each story has a protagonist, the main character, the one that seems to have the attention focused on them. Then there's usually an antagonist, the opposite of the protagonist, the so- called "bad apple" in the family. It seems to be that way with the modern family we see today. "Sonny's Blues" is mainly of an older brother who only wants to see the best for his youngest brother, Sonny. Coming from a middle-class family, things that happen to Sonny aren't what the brother though would come about.…

Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my…

“Wow! I did not know there were black Americans”. During the month I was in China, I heard this or a variant of it jokily said to me numerous times. I never took offense to it since I understood most of the media from America that came to China featured individuals who did not look like me. Furthermore, for those Americans who had come to China, they were mostly white and had come for business. While in China, I was able to share my experience as an African-American; I always found enjoyment sharing my experiences and it seemed to me those around me found enjoyment learning about a different side of America. With me sharing my experiences, they were being able to understand the diverse nature of the United States.…

Thinking back over my life, I remember what I wanted to be when I “grew up”. I didn’t want to be a typical nurse, astronaut, or singer. I wanted to be the Pink Power Ranger. Why I wanted to be a Pink Ranger was quite simple to a second grader. I wanted to save the world, make a difference, and wear a cute pink uniform. Some were supportive in my quest to become the superhero. Others tried to explain to me that the Pink Power Ranger didn’t really exist. I vowed to show them that I would one day be the Pink Ranger. Looking back, maybe I really was right? Maybe I will transform as my very own version of the Pink Power Ranger?…

All I could see were slow paced bodies walking pass me on the long everlasting hallway, unclear faces, and strange voices echoing in my head. Growing up I was the most naive child around. I thought the world was full of sunshine and rainbows and that everyone was nice to one another. My parents raised me to remember the three b’s: be nice, be respectful and behave. They told me I could be whatever I wanted to be and I believed that for a very long time until I hit middle school. I didn't know I was different. I didn't see a difference between myself and the other kids but in fact, I am a minority. I didn't know that race was a thing until we took one month out of the nine in which school was in session and learned about slavery. That's when I was introduced to the word that haunted my ancestors and will eventually haunt me. The word was a product of hatred that white people made to boost their…
