In high school, many teenagers change and develop throughout the 4 years. The novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, shows examples of change and development through the main character, Charlie. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower is persistently regarded as a coming-of-age story, largely due to the changes that occur in Charlie in the course of his freshman year of high school.” (Dominic) In the beginning of the novel, Charlie enters high school with no friends and feeling like he can’t fit in with anyone. “Charlie reveals himself to be socially awkward with other teens. He is alternatively blunt about what he is feeling, or so reserved as to be dubbed a wallflower.” (Overview) Then, he meets two seniors; Sam and Patrick. During the school year, …show more content…
However, he is making the most out of it. After all of the memories they made as friends, Charlie is now a new person. Sam and Patrick exposed Charlie to parties, drugs, and alcohol; As well as friendship, happiness, and love.
For example:
"In the silence, I remembered this one time that I never told anybody about. The time we were walking. Just the three of us. And I was in the middle. I don't remember where we were walking to or where we were walking from. I don't even remember the season. I just remember walking between them and feeling for the first time that I belonged somewhere." (Chbosky)
This is an important quote to the story because it shows how Charlie found happiness throughout the story. This quote shows how Charlie feels at the end of the novel. He is looking back on the past year and reflecting on the change. He started out with no friends; feeling lonely. Now, he feels like he actually belongs somewhere. Overall, The Perks of Being a Wallflower symbolizes change and development through Charlie in many ways. Chbosky represents change and development through Charlie from the start of the story, till the end.
