With that thought, he ran forward, listening and watching for any sign of the three men ahead of him. The trail was rising higher as he climbed Cumberland Mountain, aware of how much the land was like home. He’d meant to talk to Alma about the town below. Harrogate to the white settlers, Shawanee to the Indians, but they had both been too emotional to talk. They were blundering through a land with so much to see, but they had no time to be tourists.…

“None of them knew the color of the sky. Their eyes glanced level, and were fastened upon the waves that swept toward them. These waves were of the hue of slate, save for the tops, which were foaming white, and all of the men knew the colors of the sea. The horizon narrowed and widened, and dipped and rose, and at all times its edge jagged with waves that seemed thrust up in points like rocks.” (Crane, 271).…

The pearl was a priceless object, so Kino thought. “Its warm lucence promised a poultice against illness and a wall against insult. It closed a door on hunger.” The pearl is described as a savior in Kino’s life. Kino believed that the pearl would provide for all their needs. In the end, the pearl did not do any of the sort. The author did a good job at trying to deceit us into believing that the pearl would lead the protagonists to a happy ending and would supply for their necessities.…

The Village: In many ways, the village in which most of the story takes place, is a symbol of the oppression of the people. To create this symbol, Steinbeck personifies the town. The Gulf Another important element of the setting is the sea. It, too, takes on symbolic importance in the story. The Gulf provides the villagers with their livelihood and sustenance-fish and pearls. However, like the town, it cannot be trusted. Steinbeck uses the sea to make his readers aware that things are not always what the seem. "Although the morning was young, the hazy mirage was up. The uncertain air that magnified some things and blotted out others hung over the whole Gulf so that all sights were unreal and vision could not be trusted....There was no certainty in seeing, no proof that what you saw was there or not there [emphases added]."…

As one reads “Five mountain ranges one behind the other Under the sunset far into Vermont” (Frost, 1916, para. 5), the sense of being out in the wilderness becomes placed within one’s mind. Knowing how far the characters would have to travel in case of an emergency seems to become planted in the back of the readers mind.…
