The Acropolis is located in Athens, Greece and was built in 5th century BCE. The Parthenon, the prime temple, has a height of 150m, with the whole Acropolis having a surface area of approximately 7 acres. The Acropolis is located on a hill that overlooks Athens. In addition to the Acropolis, this hill has the same name. The Parthenon’s foundations were built out of limestone while the columns were Pentelic marble. This was the first time the greeks utilised this material and the finished Parthenon was built of approximately 13400 stones. The men who did most of the work were stone masons who specialised in marble. Those with a high level of skill were employed, no matter their social status. Surrounding the Acropolis are many ruins but not much nature as it was cleared out to build these structures.
The Parthenon was built after the defeat of the Persians by the Greeks in 479 BCE. It was built to show the wealth and eagerness of Athenian power. The Parthenon was dated by archaeologists analysing the material it was made of. The roof and midde was blown off due to the Turks in 1687 when the Parthenon was being used as an arsenal – so it was full of barrels of gunpowder. The Venetians bombarded it with cannon fire. This resulting in the middle and the roof blowing up. This does not restrict historian's research very much, as most of it is still standing.
