The Other Wes Moore Compare And Contrast Essay
In The Other Wes Moore two boys shared the same name, lived in single parent homes, lost their fathers and only lived a few blocks away from each other in Baltimore. Despite these similarities, they made very different choices, which impacted their life outcomes. The choices made by Wes 1 and Wes 2in the book The Other Wes Moore impacted their life outcomes. Wes 1 and Wes 2 made many similar choices such as selling drugs, slacking in school and being involved in criminal activity. The major difference between them was the time of their turning point. Wes 1 realized much later, but it wasn’t until after one of his choices resulted in a life sentencing in prison. Wes 2 realized when his mother sent him to a military school to try and get him in the right direction. This was very hard for Wes 2 he did all he could to leave until he made the decision to stay in which benefited him in the long run.

Wes 1 struggled in school as well he didn’t be the best he could be and put his effort into school work. Wes 1 was involved in the wrong group of friends, while out with his friend shea Wes was caught doing graffiti. Wes 1’s mother sent him to military school. Wes did all he could to escape from military school even accepting the map from Sergeant Austin that got him caught (91). Wes was offered the Rhodes scholarship where he attended Oxford for two and a half years receiving his master’s degree in international relations (176).
The choices made by Wes 2 impacted his life. Even though Wes didn’t have the best life he tried to make the best of it. He knew who is main supporters were and took their thoughts into consideration. Wes didn’t want to stay in the military school his mom sent him to, but with time he found out that it is what’s best for him and stuck it out. Due that choices Wes got many other great opportunities. He got to attend different schools and study about and graduate with a master’s

    Wes Moore continually reminds us in the beginning of the book, “the chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his” (xi). I think most of their choices involved sacrifice. The other Wes Moore never made sacrifices. Selfishly, he constantly wanted money, he earned his earnings by selling drugs and by participating in shady jobs and activities. Wes Moore’s mom sacrificed her comfort to help her son and Wes followed through and sacrificed not visiting his family.     He was caught running away from the police and they handcuffed him and placed him in the back of the squad car. The police gave Wes and his friend a stern talking to and then released them. Which one can relate this to the short story The Saints and Roughnecks. This Wes is definitely seen as a good kid that just messed up a few times which makes one believe that he is seen as a Saint.     While the environments that both boys grew up in were similar, there are key differences that influenced each Wes Moore into making different decisions later in their lives.
