Compare and Contrast – wes1 and wes2
The other Wes Moore is about two young black men who grew up in the same area and they had similar experiences and environmental influences, but they ultimately ended up on different life paths.
Both, Wes1 and Wes2 experienced death of a family member. Wes1 experienced the death of his father when he was 3 years old. Wes2 experienced the death of his grandmother also when he was young. Wes2’s father was still alive but he wasn’t around. Wes2 didn’t have a father to count on; his father chose not to be present. Wes 1 and Wes2 were fatherless. The death of Wes1’s father and Wes2’s grandmother caused some chaos in each family. Wes1 didn’t have his father to protect him anymore. Wes1’s mother was more stressed because they started having more financial problems and also not having time to take care of the kids. Wes2’s mother lost support in the house and with her kids after losing her mother.
Both parents of Wes1 went to college. Also, his grandparents went to college. His grandparents had decent jobs in the community. Wes1’s mom sent him to a private school for a safer environment, to keep him away from the streets and the drug dealers. Wes2’s mother also went to college. Wes2 went to a public school where he was participating in the outside environmental drug dealing, and where he also got arrested. While Wes1 was getting educated by his grandparents and mother, Wes2 was doing the opposite.
Wes’1 and Wes’2 moved to different towns. Wes’2 was following his big brother steps by becoming a drug dealer. Wes1 got in trouble in school for painting the walls with graffiti. Not only in school, but their behaviors and choices differed on the outside as well.
Wes1 liked playing basketball, and Wes2 enjoyed talking to the girls. Wes2 had a bad influence, which was his older brother, meanwhile, Wes1 only had good people around him to look up to. Wes1 grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar and business leader. The other is serving a life

The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is a very interesting book about 2 boys that grew up in similar neighborhoods, had similar family problems and then had two very different futures. The author Wes Moore graduated military school and joined he army, after his years of service he saw in the news paper that a man named Wes Moore was arrested for a jewelry heist. And this lead Wes to the question, "how were our futures so different". And that inspired Wes' to write this book. Wes might not know where there futures…

1.For Wes 1 my thought is that his life took a turn for success while he was at the military school. When his mother told him he had to stay at the school, Wes wasn't happy but, he had no choice. Shortly thereafter, Wes met Ty Hill. Ty influenced Wes like no one else had ever inspired him. And I believe that this meeting of the two helped Wes in a way that nothing else to this point had. He wanted to have the same kind of respect by others that Ty Hill had. I think for Wes 2 his turning point was when he saw and realized what the drugs were doing to Cheryl. He loved her and I think he believed if he could change, then he could help her do the same. His mind and heart were in the right place while he was being trained. Once he graduated…

It is also structured in a way that shows where these experiences differed and how those differences affected them differently. The book is broken up into three parts: Fathers and Angles, Choices and Second Chances, and Paths Taken and Expectations Fulfilled. Each part focuses on a different time in the men’s lives. The first part, Fathers and Angles, focuses on their childhood and the challenges that they had to overcome. Both men had similar childhoods, yet they were taught how to process them differently. As Wes said, “I was taught to remember, but never question. Wes was taught to forget, and never ask why” (4). The second part, Choices and Second Chances, is about a time period after childhood, but before either of them really became a man. They were too young to realize the outcome of some mistakes, but too old to go without punishment for them. Finally, the book focuses on where the two men ended up. This happens in the third part,, Paths Taken and Expectations…

The parallels in their stories aren't quite as compelling as they may appear initially. For example, the other Wes Moore spends a number of his developmental years living in the Bronx, NY, whereas his namesake never leaves Baltimore and its suburbs. Though Wes Moore is shipped off to military school (after his antisocial behavior in a privileged private school), his educational path is decidedly better than his namesake's because of his mother's ambition. Wes Moore hit a quick reality check when he was sent to military school. He stated, "I knew my mother was considering sending me away, but I never thought she'd actually do it" (87). Wes Moore, in a sense, thought he was too good for military school. But, he soon learned he needed to adapt to his new environment because he was going to be there for a while. During the time Wes Moore was in military school, he stated, "That's when I started to understand that I was in a different environment. Not simply because I was in the middle of Pennsylvania instead of the Bronx or Baltimore. It was a different psychological environment, where my normal expectations were inverted, where leadership was honored and class clowns were ostracized." (Moore 96)…

While the environments that both boys grew up in were similar, there are key differences that influenced each Wes Moore into making different decisions later in their lives. The book begins with a discussion of their fathers; the author Wes Moore, although for a short time in his life, had a loving father who was involved and active. The other Wes Moore, however, had an alcoholic father who was absent his entire life, not bothering to get involved with his son. The second Wes Moore, unlike the author of this novel, never had a father figure and the only male role model he had was his elder brother who eventually dropped out of school to sell drugs. Both boys were also raised by their mothers but were raised in entirely different matters. Joy was a hardworking, strong and independent woman who had an education and grew up in a disciplined and structured environment. Joy was determined to provide the same for her three children, going as far as moving in with her parents and working multiple jobs to allow her children to go to private school instead of the failing public schools of the Bronx. Joy and Wes’ grandparents were strict and provided a stable household with high expectations and respect for rules and severe punishments for breaking those rules. For example, when Wes started to fail in school and did not improve his grades or his behavior his mother sent him to military school. Joy was a strict disciplinarian. Mary, the mother of the other Wes Moore, was not a strict disciplinarian and did not grow up in a stable environment. Mary’s mother died when she…
