Psychology Through the Old Man and the Sea
An old man dedicates his life to his passion, the sea. Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man in the Sea” portrays the psychological lens. This is developed through the old man’s relationship with the boy, his positive attitude, and loneliness.
The psychological lens is visible through Santiago's relationship with the boy. For example, when Santiago and the boy are fishing, the boy says, “Keep the blanket around you, you’ll not fish without eating while i’m alive.” (19) This quote portrays the psychological lense because it shows how they care about each other and how their relationship is similar to a father and sons. The boy is partly what keeps Santiago going. Hemingway shows this lense to the reader once again when he writes, “The old man looked at him with his sun burned confident loving eyes.” (13) This quote shows the reader how the two think about each other in a loving manner. They are using each other to fill in the blanks that they don’t have in their lives. Overall, Santiago’s relationship with the boy is very important.

For example, when Santiago had injured his arm on the skiff, he said, “... he could rub it for me and loosen it down the forearm, but it will loosen up.” (62) This shows the reader how Santiago takes bad situations and makes the best out of them. Once doubt reaches his mind, he finds a way to get rid of the negative energy. Hemingway once again demonstrates a positive attitude through Santiago, when the old man says to himself, “You better be fearless and confident yourself.” (84) This quote shows the psychological lens because when the situation turns tough, he thinks of one person that always boosts him up, Joe Dimaggio.
