The Old Man Hamilton Analysis
In Marie Padgett Hamilton’s article, readers are told about the most mysterious and dreadful character Chaucer wrote—the Old Man. Hamilton argues that the Old Man is none other than Old Age (Elde) otherwise known as the Messenger of Death. Hamilton says the Old Man has outlived his desire for living as well as desire for money, which means he must stand for the Harbinger of Death. She also points out that the Old Man is referred to as “age” meaning Old Age four times in the “Pardoner’s Tale.” Hamilton later tells how the Pardoner selling indulgences against temporal punishment in purgatory is a reminder to the people that Death appears suddenly and is imminent so they must repent. The article then informs readers of the Three Messengers:

The gothic genre, thought to be introduced in 1769 by Horace Walpole’s noel The Castle of Otranto, was remembered for its crude, grotesque, exaggerated nature. Although in medieval times the Gothic movement had not commenced, Chaucer’s can be considered a forerunner to this movement as many aspects in the pardoners tale are clear gothic, however Chaucer did not perceive his writing as Gothic, he did not intentional write a Gothic tale like later authors did. The pardoner’s tale is considered the most Gothic out of all the ‘Canterbury Tales’ as it is the most abundant with gothic elements. These elements include Chaucer’s description of the Pardoner, the attractiveness of evil in the text, the presence of supernatural and horror, the digressions, and the personification of death. It’s because of the gothic elements this text that modern interpretations have viewed The Pardoners’ Tale as one of the earliest examples of a Gothic text.…

Death is not always present in gothic literature, the idea and other sins are definitely present. In the Pardoner’s Tale Death is symbolic rather than a character. The three rioters are trying to pursue Death ‘I shal him seke by wey and eek by street’ the use of setting is prevalent here because it suggest that the rioters are looking for a specific place where they will find Death. In fact, it’s their fate that they are trapped within and they will eventually reach their nemesis of which Death is a part of. In the same way, the Old Man has a dark and mysterious quality which could be supernatural and he could be symbolised as death himself. He says ‘A man that wolde chaunge his youthe for myn age’ which suggests that he does want to die and could be close to death in that sense but also this phrase suggests an eeriness to the old man and makes the audience think of who he could actually be. The audience at the time would be used to death due to many diseases that were around but for the women death could be seen as a fascinating subject because they are having to stay at home and will not have a hobby or a job.…

Hamilton the Revolution is a book full of many things. War, violence, love, hate, brilliance and idiocy. These are just a few of the many topics and ideas covered in the massive doorstop of a book that is Hamilton. Although it is a wonderful book, I don’t think I would want to live through it. War is glorified by many characters in the play, including Hamilton himself, but I really cannot see war as anything but a horrific waste. I would be stuck in the middle of bloodbath, forced to pick a side. Although I do see the reasoning behind those who revolted, I’m not sure I would want to risk my life and livelihood just to avoid taxation. This would be an unpopular opinion though, and I would be looked down upon by many. I would not want to live…

In "The Pardoner's Tale, the Pardoner uses his story to speak out against many social problems, all of which he is guilty of. He preaches about drunkenness, while he is intoxicated while telling the story. Blasphemy and greed are other problems he speaks of. Ironically, he attempts to sell fake religious relics and is amazingly greedy. Yet there are also many ironic situations in the story itself. In the beginning of the story, the three rioters make a pact to "be brothers," "to each defend the others," and "to live and die for one another" in protection from death. In going out to fulfill their vows, they encounter money and end up killing each other over greed. After finding the money, the men plan to stay with it until it becomes dark when they can safely take it away. To tide themselves over until then, they send the youngest one out to get food and wine, and while he is away they plan to kill for his share of the money. Ironically, the youngest one is planning the same thing by slipping poison into the drinks of his companions. When he returns, he is attacked and stabbed to death by the other men. The remaining men drink to his death and their newfound fortune and as a result of the poison and, theoretically, their greed, they die as well.…

By using Situational and Verbal Irony, John Collier’s short story, “The Chaser” illustrates the unrealistic expectations of youth compared to mature and realistic expectation of an adult. The young man, Alan Austen, is deeply in love with Diana and wishes to possess her completely. With age and experience, the old man knows this is not a scenario in which love can flourish and grow. The old man uses many ploys to persuade Alan to return to the store for subsequent purchase. For example, in the last dialogue, the words of the old man are “Au revoir” (Collier 3) .The definition carries an ironic double meaning. “Goodbye” suggests this is the last time they will meet, but the other meaning of the word is “until I see you again” which could relate to the next visit by the young man in return for the poison to kill Diana. “Then customers come back, later in life, when they are better off, and want more expensive things. Here you are. You will find it very effective” (3). By the end of the story, the reader is able to grab the concept of how ironic that the love potion is extremely cheap compared to the very expensive “glove cleaner”. The old man refers to the poison as a “life cleaner” which can ironically stand for the cleaning of the one who consumed the love potion in such a way as death.…
