How does one change from a narcissistic creature to one that is patient and caring? That is a question we must ponder as we dwell into the mind of Odysseus, the hero of the epic, the Odyssey. Odysseus is a king lost for twenty years after the Trojan War, used to putting up a fight when it comes to surviving a new land. Imposing his authority over his crew, Odysseus demands “I alone should listen to their song... We must obey the orders as I give them” (lines 727-780). This shows how Odysseus uses his power to manipulate his shipmates into supporting his selfish decisions. After more ill-advised decisions that end up killing all of his shipmates, Odysseus is proclaimed to be a “patient hero” (lines 1328-1331). A fantastic example of dramatic…

Another huge characteristic of superheroes is courage. Courage is a trait that modern and mature heroes alike possess. In Anglo-Saxon literature this was also a very important characteristic. In fact, in the poem, after Beowulf had just defeated Grendel, he takes the severed limb as a trophy. “The victory, for the proof, hanging high From the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster’s Arm, claw and shoulder and all.” (408-410). This is evidence of Beowulf’s strength because it takes so much power to remove a limb in general, imagine having to do it with bare…

A critical event in anyone’s life can change people way of thinking and/or reacting, like Odysseus. In the book the Odyssey, we learned the story about the great warrior Odysseus, who was trying to go home, from a long and brutal war against Troy. He was a great fighter who demonstrated his strength and power in the Trojan War, but his prideful, hubris, and impulsive personality, made his journey back home be extremely long. Throughout most of the story of the Odyssey, there are many examples that demonstrate how Odysseus reacts to certain situation, and how his personality and the way he is, gets him in a lot of trouble. His whole voyage allowed Odysseus to see the outcomes of his reactions, which help him change from being an impulsive person, to a person that strategically plans his actions and waits for the right time to act upon them. The difficult, tedious, and long journey that Odysseus went through just to get to his home town in Ithika, changed him, for the better.…
