The odyssey
Even a hero has character flaws that make him more human than hero because of their good traits being weighed down by their bad traits. That is what keeps Odysseus in The Odyssey from standing out as the hero he was. The Odyssey was written by Homer and it is an epic poem. The Odyssey is about a young war hero, Odysseus, who has to make a journey home after the ten year Trojan War. He needs to arrive home before his son grows up because that is when his wife will move on to another man that will inherit his kingdom. Odysseus, the protagonist can be indirectly characterized both positively and negatively because he is both smart and arrogant.

In The Odyssey Odysseus is smart in many ways and shows it. As Odysseus is in the of Helios and wakes up from his sleep and sees his men eating the cattle of Helios, he describes his men,”. . for their own recklessness destroyed the male children and they killed and on the feasted on the cattle of Lord Helios. . .” (Homer 1.10-14) This is smart because he knows that to feed on these cattle was not a good idea . When Odysseus is in the Cyclops cave and they are trying to escape, he ties his men to the bottom of the sheep so the Cyclops doesn’t feel them.(Homer 9.437-439) This is smart because the Cyclops were feeling the sheep to make sure they were sheep not men, and Odysseus was able to find a way for he and his men to escape by using the weakness of the Cyclops of not being able to see the men even when they were tied to the sheep. Both of these examples show that Odysseus can be characterized as smart.

In The Odyssey, Odysseus is arrogant and cannot control the urge to try to prove to his men just how much of a smart leader he is. For example, when he is sailing away from the Cyclops and the island he yells at the Cyclops stating his name. (Homer 9. 500-505) . This is arrogant because he has just saved himself and his men and now puts them all at risk by giving the Cyclops their position and thus putting them all in danger again. Later, he yells at his men for opening the wind bag that Aole gave Odysseus to help him on his way home. Instead of accepting his own blame in the journey taking longer he blames his men for it. Had he told them what was in the bag instead of hoping they would just think he had the know how to make the journey on his own with no help from anyone. These examples show through indirect characterization that Odysseus had arrogant tendencies that kept him from being a better man and hero than he was.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus can be indirectly characterized as smart and arrogant. He is a round character because he possesses both good and bad traits. In The Odyssey Odysseus is trying to find his way home and makes many good and bad decisions, even though he was a hero because he made it he still had many flaws. Even heros can be human because everyone makes mistakes.

Everyone has different personality traits. Odysseus has both hero qualities and not so heroic qualities. This epic poem is called “The Odyssey”. It was written by Homer, an ancient Greek poet. Epic hero qualities are traits the hero character of a story has. They include strength, loyalty, intelligence, and courage. One would think Odysseus has many epic hero traits, but he also has many traits that are not heroic. There are many examples of his heroic qualities. Something that shows loyalty is when he says, “So we moved out, sad in the vast offing, having our precious lives, but not our friends.” This shows that Odysseus is loyal because talking about not having his friends anymore and being with his men. He also has strength. “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under the rowing benches…” shows this because it takes strength to tie three men down to a ship. When he shows courage, he says “We beached there, and I told the crew to stand by and keep watch over the ship: as for myself I took my twelve best men and went ahead.” in which one would notice Odysseus had the courage to go see who the enormous man was when he reached Cyclops Island and told his men to watch the ship for him.…

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

In the Beginning of the Odyssey it seems at first a bit strange that a ruler like Odysseus, one who is so powerful would be in this conundrum to begin with. Odysseus definitely possesses the hero archetype, he left his community and showed intelligence and strength that others would try to emulate. A good example of Odysseus’s intelligence would be in the cave with the Polyphemus when odysseys famously told it his name was “nobody” (Homer 9.410) in order to…

Odysseus was very witty because he came up with the battle strategy that ultimately let them win the trojan war. He created a wooden horse and hde soldiers in it to later attack. Odysseus set up a peace offering, which was the horse that help many soldiers,, they trojans accepted and believed they won the war. After a few hours after all the trojans celebrated and were very drunk, they came out of the horse, which was in the center of the town, and they attacked. They used brutal force and slaughtered many people. The Ithacan were ultimately victorious against the Trojans. Another display of wit was when he escaped from polyphemus, poseidon's son who is also a cyclops. Odysseus and his crew went into Polyphemus's cave and camped out for shelter. The cyclops was not happy and wanted to destroy and eat the crew members and Odysseus. Odysseus has to lose a few men to Polytmus by the cyclops eating the crew. Odysseus makes a plan to stab the cyclops in his eye and then claim hi name is Nobody, so when the cyclops calls out to his neighbors they believe that nothing is wrong. The plan works out flawlessly, except for when they left the island of the cyclops. When they left they left by boat to escape to another island and then ultimately back to Ithaca. The plan fell short because Odysseus was unaware that Polyphemus was Poseidon, the god of the seas, son. So, when odysseus and his crew left the island on boat and odysseus was boasting how he outwitted a cyclops, Poseidon heard and got angry because he had just injured his son. Odysseus also exemplified an epic character by his wit by listening to the sirens sing. Odysseus is the only person to ever be able to hear the sirens because he used his wit. By Odysseus placing bees wax in his ears he was able to listen to the sirens but not have to deal with the complications of him being dragged into the water ultimately dying. Odysseus exemplifies an…

Odysseus was a quick witted man at warfare because he was known for his famous wooden horse trick. He came up with the idea of the "Trojan Horse". But what was his plan? It was to get the Greeks to hide in the Trojan horse and have the people of Troy to open the gates so the Greeks would attack. In my opinion this is a very clever and outstanding idea. All of this lead his men to victory. Which proved that he was intelligent.…

In the Odyssey, Odysseus has been portrayed as a war hero. His characteristics on the other hand, portray a villain. In Book 9, Odysseus stole Polyphemus’ sheep, as well as blinded him. Polyphemus was considered a villain when he held Odysseus captive, yet Odysseus was still a hero when he stole his sheep in the first place. This shows that heroes gained their glory by taking over other regions. Heroes sacked cities, heroes attacked the innocent, heroes fought for what they thought was right. The time period the Odyssey took place revolved around fighting. As a result, the heroes were then based on who ever sacked more cities, not an impact of the greater good. All in all, a hero is shaped through portrayal and the time period.…
