The Night the Power Went Out
THE NIGHT THE POWER WENT OUT!

It was a dark rainy night; the rain came down hard, sheet upon sheet, of bone chilling rain. I lay relaxed on the couch watching a horror movie when suddenly there was a loud crack of thunder and then there I lay all alone in complete darkness. I felt a little nervous but hazardously made my way to the kitchen by the guidance of the moons light. I went in search of a torch and found one on the kitchen table. I flicked it on and at that precise moment I heard a crash from above. I started to make my way towards the stairs; torch clutched tightly in one hand and a gun in the other. As I ascended the stairs I felt an ice cold gust of wind which made me tremble all over. As I reached the second floor I found that the window was no more but shattered glass on the ground. I spun around in search of the perpetrator. As I made my way towards the shattered window something powerful tackled me and knocked the breath right out of me. I started to collapse to the ground; this sent my torch and my gun flying through the air and land in complete darkness. I turned towards my attacker and gasped in shock. It seemed like a vicious, four eyed beast with long fangs which looked like it was craving flesh; my flesh. I searched along the ground for a weapon that may assist me and to my relief I came across a sharp object. It was the shards of broken glass from the window. I grasped it tightly and started to stab the beast ferociously. Its skin was hard but I could feel the glass piercing it and its unusually thick blood oozing down my arm. I felt its hot putrid breath upon my face as it growled viciously revealing rows upon rows of sharp yellow teeth. It started to back away but I could see that it was preparing for one final attack. The moon lit up the entire room with an array of bright light and I managed to spot the gun. I made a dive for it and at the same time the beast made a dive for me. It ripped through my leg with is enormous teeth as I

My adolescent legs strain as I continue along the path aimlessly, my stomach rumbles in emptiness as I realise I left without food. How can one think of such things at a time like that? I most certainly didn't, and now the only thing dwelling in my gut was the sore pain that was the increasing hate for the cruel beings that raised me. Lost in my thoughts my melancholy walking pattern is disrupted as my foot catches on a thick branch and I fall swiftly face first into a small jagged rock. Dazed, I lift myself up from the ground and dust myself off; my left eyelid closes automatically as blood rolls down the top of my face. Cursing, I wipe my face with my sleeve, soaking the cotton a blackish-red instantly. The shock dissipates and pain sets in, sharp agony mixed with a strange tingling sensation on my forehead. I forcedly push the pain to the back of my mind, and go to take my next step just as a small blue spherical object reflecting the moon catches my eye on the edge of the track. Interested, I walk over to it, and pick it up in my hands. After examining the dirt caked ball, images of my younger brother flash through my mind. Times spent together, kicking a ball in the backyard, taking him to his first movie, and then screams of pain, blood, oh god the blood is.... The ball drops to the ground as my hand trembles from the horrible images. I kick it far away off the trail in anger as Im reminded of the situation Im in. The smoky scent of a…

In the middle of one night, I had awoken and made my way out of our bedroom after noticing that my husband was still not home. I looked out the front window and saw him walking unsteadily in the direction of the house and our black cat making his way towards the drunken man. Suddenly, I witnessed him violently snatching Pluto and the frightened cat accidently biting his hand. In horror, I watched as my once-loving husband became possessed by anger. With malice showing in his eyes, he grabbed the unfortunate pet by the throat and pulled out his pocket knife. My hand rose to my mouth in fear and I gasped as the ill-fated cat had one of his eyes cut from his socket. With tears threatening to spill down my face, I hurriedly made my way back to the bedroom and feigned sleep. The last thing I wanted was to experience the other side of my husband’s rage. My thoughts prevented…

It was a chilly fall night. I remember walking into the kitchen as I picked up the knife walking toward the pumpkin to cook the seeds inside. I put the knife against the pumpkin, and it started to glow a bright orange, it was that dang pumpkin. I pushed down on the knife to slice into it, but that was the worst mistake ever. I tried pushing harder to cut but then all of a sudden, the knife was getting harder to push away from me. That pumpkin was pushing the blade toward my stomach, soon I came to realize this was going to be my last pumpkin carving ever. I thought it was going to be “just a desert” it was something bigger, much scarier than that… The blade slashed through my skin like a hunter gutting a deer! I let out a loud cry and the glow…

He went through man by man by man in a matter of minutes with the most utterly disgusting noise of horrible manners. The orange creature swiftly creeps into the room to the right and retrieves a sharp pointed object. It glimmers in the moonlight. He disappears back into the room and stumbles in, clutching a bowl of fresh, clear water. He clumsily slams the bowl of water on the floor beside my holding cell. A sharp scraping sound pierces my ears as the orange creature begins to dissect the mesh from the window beside my cell. He nods in satisfaction when he finishes. Then, he circuits back to the other side of the room. In an instant, the creature is airborne, soaring high above my cell and into the window, shattering the glass. I hear the pale creature croak “what the…..” from above and I know my time is coming soon. The pale creature quickly bounds down the stairs and rounds the corner to the window. His hairy, giant, bare stomach presses against my cage as it struggles to see what caused the broken window. I know this is my only shot, so I lunge. I heave my cage over the edge of the table, slamming against the pale creature. It whines in pain. At the last second, I heave a hefty breath and leap. I taste the icy air surrounding me. Somehow, I land with a certain grace I never knew I possessed in the bowl. The pale creature clutches its stomach and deflates in pain. The orange creature reappears from the outside and plucks my bowl in its mouth. He scuttles out the window to…

Blood flowing out of my skull and hands. I can feel my whole head throbbing. The surges of pain continue over and over. I decide to pull strength from within to get up to check out the quad. I soon realize that the crack I heard was the snapping of the axle rod forcing the tire to be bent and rendering the quad un-drivable. Leaving the quad behind, I decided to walk back to camp. Of course I forgot my phone back at camp not planning that I would be taking a mouthful of dirt. As I walk I notice a white figure out of the corner of my eye. Since I was hurt and not sensible, my first thought was that this figure is a flesh seeking monster ready to gobble up my entire body whole. Given the fact that I actually believed that, I began to quicken my pace from a walk to a jog to a sprint. Just as I was ready to fall over and die of exhaustion, I notice an orange glow near me. This time it wasn’t a monster it was light coming from my camp’s fire. After my lengthy journey, I reached my dad and he rushed over to me baffled by my injury. With tears in my eyes, I sat down and began to regurgitate the whole experience. That night as I drift off into the abyss that was my dreams, I settled on the fact that the white figure was only the tail of a squirrel. I guess I deserved that fright given the fact that I did invade his…

Jolts of pain ran throughout my entire body, blood clumped my wirehaired coat and pooled around my body. Tasting the metallic blood trickling down my cracked lips made me cringe. In between my teeth, I felt pieces of human flesh stuck, but that was the least of my worries. Urges to scream came, but when I opened my mouth, no sound was able to come out. The trees rustled in the wind and the wind howled. I could hear the faint laughs and joy coming from the castle, but was too weak to care. Images of my family appeared in the darkness, making me disappointed in myself and I whispered, “ I did this for you” into the empty air. I continued to watch the night sky until the numbness overtook my body and I shut my eyes. As I slowly fell into eternal sleep, I wondered if tomorrow I would be remembered as a hero or a…

My heart leaps out of my throat and I gulp as the creature’s pale white eyes glare into my soul. The intoxicating smell of blood floods my nostrils. Blood slowly trickles down her chin and her once friendly face is now without emotion. Taking a step back, I glance behind me and see my razor-sharp machete lying on the ground, no more than twenty feet from me. I glimpse a final time at my best friend and bolt over to my machete, picking it up quickly. I then sprint straight for my backyard a few blocks away.…

    Room Is a Mess

I open my door to bedroom the, smell hits me like a freight train, it knocks me to the floor. Turning my head I witness the clothes I wore last week morph into hills and mountain ranges on my floor. Old lollipops with their wrappers dangle from the stem like trees sway the in the breeze. Mold on an old PB&J turns into mushrooms while the dust from the floor turns into clouds and lightly shadows the rising mountains while the rolling hills surround it. As I walk through the deep forest the trees sway in a steady beat. I notice the moldy mushroom, glance at the dust bunnies and the black ants, that have slipped through the walls for that PB&J. I step on a smaller moldy mushroom and a putrid smell fills my nose, covering my slippers with a blue fuzz and warm goop. From the bottom of this revolting and nauseating clothes pile, I head up the mountain traipse through the sickening sweatshirts, stinky socks and grimy jeans. Halfway up I encounter a new group of dirty-dangerous-dust bunnies and they look like they mean business. I scan the area trying to find a weapon, but in this mess I have as much luck as winning the lottery. I find a belt on the jeans caked with dirt and hold on for my life, my conscious filled to the brim with what could happen if I fell. All of a sudden, I feel a rumble and watch a blurry cat tail zoom by my head and observe the dust bunnies fall to their death. I traverse across the last bit of my dangerous climb past this mountain mess, and reach the top. My cleanest of clean shirts, bleached white, the shirts smell like lilac from the detergent. I spin my body around counter-clockwise trying to get my bearings but instead I hear the steady beat of Three Little Birdies by Bob Marley coming from speakers, but where?…

    The Night

My featured painting today entitled The Night was painted by Max Beckmann during 1918 and 1919. It is housed at the Kunstammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf. This is an early example of Beckmann’s grotesque and appalling visionary paintings with its misshapen figures. Before us we have an overcrowded room in a modern city. Beckman himself said he wanted this work to be looked upon as a large modern history painting tinged with a sense of evil. Three men have invaded the room and are terrorising the occupants. The man to the left has been hung by the neck by one of the intruders while a man with a bandaged head, wearing waistcoat and tie and smoking a pipe, twists his arm. Two women can also be seen in the scene. One, in the central foreground with her back to us, possibly the man’s wife, wears red stockings and is bound to a post after having been raped. The second woman whose feet we can just make out at the top right of the painting, is held upside down by a man whose hat resembles the type worn by Lenin. To the right a blonde-haired child is about to be dragged off. Under the table we see an old phonograph, the sound from which may have been used to blot out the cries from those being tortured. Also partly under the table on the left we see a dog whose head is raised as he howls for help. This is a scene of urban hell, an unfathomable and vile scene.…

I woke up this morning excited about my daughters first day of 5th grade. The sun was peering through my curtains as I yarned. I turned my face and was greeted by a sloppy kiss from my beloved dog Sasha while Lady squeezed in to the gathering for some affection. I put Emily to bed early wanting her to get a good night sleep. In the middle of the night Philip startled me by sitting up in bed around 5 am saying he had to go to the office early, although he was back to see Emily off to school. My friend Sharon picked up Emily along with her two children this am. Sharon greeted Philip and I in a friendly matter also excited about the kids first day of school. Her daughter was attending kindergarten for the first time. Philip was acting peculiar and I had to prompt him to tell Emily good bye. After the car drove away I got dressed I had a dentist appt. Philip went to work. I was in a very cheerful mood although I notice Philip was acting quirky.…
