I had been awaiting her arrival for a long 9 months. Saying I was over ridden with joy was an untruth I was afraid to bare, So I put on a smile and pretended that the arrival of my first child was going to be a good experience. Truth be told I knew my life was about to change forever and I wasn't sure I was going to be a good mother. All these doubts running through my mind was almost draining out the pain of the inconsistent contractions in my belly, my head started spinning a little with the what ifs and possibilities of failure heightened by the anticipation of my Daughters arrival. I felt so alone even though I was surrounded by my family, I knew better than anyone that this burden would be mine alone, to bare for a lifetime.…

    Mama Day

The entire structure of Mama Day is fitting to the telling of multiple love stories entertwined. Like the most heartfelt episode of Seinfeld ever Gloria Naylor doesn’t tell a love story, but rather lays out in detail the events of everyday life for all of the central characters. In the process the love stories of the characters are all told at once. The most obvious example is the relationship between George and Cocoa (arguably the main love story). Through the book we see them meet, fall in love, and go through excitement and hardship; all that love is. There is also the love story of Mama Day, Abigail, and Cocoa. Even though Abigail is Cocoa’s grandmother and Mama Day is her great-aunt, they both take on the role of mother through their mutual love for her. There is also the love story between Bernice, Ambush and Little Caesar. Despite their squabbles, they love each other. Love is one of the major themes in this book.…

March 26, 2004 I got up at 7 am and took me a good hot bath. After my bath I put me on some clothes to go to the hospital in Rutherfordton. On this day all I could smell was the scent of hot spring air, birds chirping, and fresh spring flowers. This was the day my labor was induced and I gave birth to my first son. I was 17 years old not expecting to jump head first into a teenage life as being a mother. Leaving home going to the hospital was my husband, grandmother, and my mother. When I got there, a nurse by the name of heather signed me in. After that is when everything got real interesting.…

In my past, I was a partier. I did drink and experimented with drugs. Becoming a mother made me not interested in those things anymore. I was thinking about how to be the best mom I could be, how to better mine and Cheyenne’s life, and what to do next. I believe this is normal when you have a kid. I took all these thoughts into consideration though. I did not grow up knowing my birth family, I was in foster care. I really did not want that for my daughter. To keep this from happening I continued to think, and wanted to…
