After reading:

1. Describe Cecil and his life.

Cecil is a short thin 19 year old that is spending his summer break at a logging camp to make money for next years tuition to U.C.B for an arts program. He graduated high school at 17and has already finished a first year of university. His parents divorced when he was very young he grew up in several different foster homes. A man named Moose at the logging camp also bullied him.

2. Describe Moose Maddon.

Moose Maddon appears to be slightly older than Cecil. Maddon probably dropped out of school, an therefore seems to have a need to pick on those who are smarter then him. Moose is a saw boss and is very strong. He doesn’t have any sympathy and always picks on others and nobody seems to like him because of it.

3. What is the setting of the story?

The story takes place in a logging camp, and often in the bunkers where the men live, during the summer holidays. This is important to the story, and a course to Cecil’s problems; the setting gives Moose an opportunity of giving Cecil the hardest work possible.

4. List the “jokes” that Moose plays on Cecil.

The jokes Moose plays on Cecil are carrying Cecil and his mattress down to the river and putting him in the water, Moose painted a wide mustache on Cecil’s face with tar while he slept, putting a raccoon in his bunk, kicking over his tea water and hiding his cloths or tying them in knots.

5. Is Cecil liked by the men at the camp? Explain.

Yes, Cecil is liked by all the men except Moose. An example of this is all the men except Moose quit picking on him and when ever Moose tries to pick on him they all try to stop him. Also when Moose burned Cecil’s hand with the saw blade, some of the men tried to go after Moose.

6. The author shows us the characters not always by description but by action. Provide two examples.

    The weather and temperature were the major conflicts in this story.
