I’ve read a lot of Hawthorne's work and in "The Minister’s Black Veil", Hawthorne presents another variation on his favorite theme: that humankind is stuck with the so-called seven deadly sins which include pride, covetousness, lust, envy, gluttony, anger, and sloth, I think. Like all Hawthorne’s short stories, it displays the author’s vivid imagination, which I really enjoy. It also shows exceptional artistry. In “Young Goodman Brown”, another one of his stories, Hawthorne tears off people’s masks and exposes their real faces, in “The Minister’s Black Veil” he hides the face of a single character and thereby creates the impression that the exposed faces of all the other characters are actually masked. I think the imagery of that is really…

In “The Minister's Black Veil,” There is a pastor, Mr. Hooper, who starts wearing a black veil. This disturbs the townspeople and causes them to do outrageous things. Mr. Hooper never tells why he wears the veil, but one reason he wears the veil could be to show that everybody has secrets, everybody has something that they hide from the rest of us. In turns, he wants to prove a point, that we all need to remove our veils, we all need to stop keeping these deep dark secrets from everybody. Why he wants to prove this point is unknown to everybody but him.…

In “Young Man’s Folly”, the author tells a story about a boy and his mother, that by boy’s foolishness of his father are left alone. The Minister’s Black Veil is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story centers around A religious leader (Minister) named Mr. Hooper. He attends a funeral of a woman he had a dalliance with. He astonishes the mourners with a black veil streaked across his face. What made this story more intriguing is the fact that he had a fiancé. Now, Mr. Hooper, who was once a sagacious man in the eyes of his churchgoers, is now a man shrouded with a black cloth and dark secrets. I find that it is fairly reasonable of him to hide his eyes from the others for many rational reasons.…

Jealousy is illustrated in both stories. In Everyday Use, the climax of the story is when the grandmother and Dee are making a quilt for Maggie. Dee (Wangaroo) is jealous of Maggie because the quilt is being made for Maggie. The quilt is composed of the grandmother's old dresses. Dee forgets that her grandmother offered her a quilt when she was going away for college, but at the time she told her grandmother they were "old-fashioned and out of style." Now she wants the quilt simply to have it, to get it away from her sister. The story The Prodigal Son illustrates jealousy between two siblings. The older brother is jealous of the younger brother. He is jealous because of how his father treats the younger brother after the younger brother returns from a foreign land. The younger brother went to a foreign land with his father's money and lost it all. He returned to his father when a famine happened and apologized for losing all his money. The younger brother told his father he was only worth to be one of his father's slaves. His father threw a party for his return. The older brother gets jealous because every day he works for his father and never gets a party. His father was happy because ""¦for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again: and was lost, and is found." The father was simply happy that his son had repented and returned to him. He had realized the seriousness of his sins.…

In the first paragraph alone, many important aspects of the narrator's character are revealed. It is revealed to the reader that the narrator was in love and is grieving for the woman he loved. It is also in the first paragraph where the major conflict is revealed. The major conflict, in which the narrator is involved, is his own torment from the memory of his dead wife. This is evident when the narrator says, "When I saw our room again, our bed, our furniture, everything that remains of the life of a human being after death – I was seized by such a violent attack of fresh grief that I felt like opening the window and throwing myself onto the street." Initially, the author intends the reader to feel sorry for the narrator and his loss. The thing that motivates the narrator in the conflict is his resolution to finish grieving before it consumes him. This is evident when he says, "Happy is the man whose heart forgets everything that it has contained."…
