The Memory Keepers Daughter
BABY SHOWER IDEAS
Sweet, Sweet Baby
Give the guests a list of pregnancy- or parenting-related descriptions and ask them to match those descriptions to the most fitting candy name. Use the examples from the list below or come up with your own:
Twins = M&Ms
Triplets = 3 Musketeers
Contractions = Whoppers
Epidural = Lifesavers
Hospital bill = Payday
Breastfeeding = Milky Way
College costs = 100 Grand
Girl's name = Baby Ruth
Boys' names = Mike & Ike
Mom's tummy after pregnancy = Jelly Bellies
What you can't give your child enough of = Hugs & Kisses

Coaxing Out "Baby"
The best part of this game is that the mom-to-be doesn't have a clue what's going on. (It'll be a little tricky to keep it from her, but you'll manage!) When each guest arrives, have her write down on a piece of paper her name and the number of times she thinks the mom-to-be will say "baby" during the shower.
Whoever guesses closest without going over the final tally wins a prize. Things can get especially interesting as guests who've guessed a higher number try to coax the mom-to-be to talk about her baby, and guests who've guessed a lower number try to change the subject.
It'll all make sense in the end when you reveal the game to the mom-to-be.
Note: If you're going to play this game, it's best to skip the one above called "Forbidden Baby" – or you can play that game and skip this one. Playing both at the same shower can get confusing.

Don't Say "Baby"
This is a fun game that keeps everyone on their toes as the party goes on.
Put a bowl of diaper pins at the door and ask each person to take one on her way in. When everyone has arrived, announce that the word "baby" is taboo. If you catch someone saying the forbidden word, she has to give you her diaper pin (and any pins she's collected from other guests).
At the end of the party, the person with the most pins gets the door prize.

    What if you were the only one that had to bear pain like no other out of your whole city? Would you be able to do it or would you crumble under the pressure? Well this is what the main character, Jonas, in Lois Lowry’s The Giver, faces every day. The Committee in Jonas’s community decided that taking away choices and feelings would create a utopia to live in. This made everyone in the community the same which helped to provide a more peaceful world. Even though the book begins with what seems to be the perfect place to live, it turns out that the people in the community are just going through the motions of life. As Jonas begins his assignment as the Receiver of Memories, he learns that in protecting the community from the memories, they do not have real feelings. In my opinion, Jonas’s assignment as Receiver of Memories is ultimately a punishment because he has to receive very painful memories plus he can’t relate to anyone in the community and he can’t tell anyone else about it.…

    In everyone’s life there is a moment that is so dreadful and horrific that it is best to try to push it further and further back into your mind. When traumatized by death for example it is very natural to shut off the memory in order to self-defense suppresses the awful emotional experience. Very often it is thoughtful that this neglecting and abandoning is the best way to forget. In Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved, memory is depicted as a dangerous and deliberating faculty of human consciousness. In this novel Sethe endures the oppression of self imposed prison of memory by revising the past and death of her daughter Beloved, her mother and Baby Suggs. In Louise Erdrich’s story Love Medicine, memory of death and the past is revealed carefully among the characters of June, Gordie, Henry and Lyman. It is apparent by juxtaposing these two novels that the theme of memory of the past and death plays a major role in these characters lives. However the theme of memory is shown and depicted for two different reasons in both these novels. In Beloved, Sethe expresses an insatiable obsession with her memories with the past to understand the causes of death and then being able to cope with them. While in Love Medicine, memory is shown through a series of episodes where Gordie and Lyman attempts to bring back things alive again by revisiting the past of June and Henry through their death.…

    When The Giver told Jonas “Welcome Receiver of Memory,” on page 75, it was just part of the story. But now it’s, loaded with symbolism in this sentence. All the people in the story don’t get to know the history of the past, but this sentence shows that there is history in the book and that someone is going to find out all about the history and memories. The Giver, by Lois Lowry, has a theme of memory/history and three examples in the story, are Jonas, animals, and elsewhere. In this essay you will find why these are representing memory/history.…
