The Mayan Civilization
The Mayan civilization was located in what is now known as Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador and also in the area of the five southern states of Mexico, including Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Yucatan. The civilization was originally founded during the pre-classic period (about 2,000 BC to 250 AD). According to the chronology of Central America, many of the Mayan cities reached their highest level of sophistication through the classic period (approx. 250 BC to 900 AD), and they continued during the post-classic period, until the arrival of the Spaniards. The history of civilization is estimated to have been about 3,000 years old. During that time, Mayan people spoke hundreds of dialects. The civilization was known …show more content…
According to a new study, a giant blue hole located under the water and surrounded by coral caves, sharks, provides new evidence for archeologists about the mystery of the fall of the Mayan civilization.Scientists from Rice University and Louisiana State University found a cave in the Barrier Reef, which surrounds the giant blue hole that was found near the beaches (Belize) and which has a depth of 400 feet. This discovery could support the theory that drought and the bad climate pushed Mayan civilization to shift from a regional power to a smattering of rival survivors, which eventually led to the transformation of this civilization to an almost missing …show more content…
However, this giant blue hole considered is the best evidence so far, because it is located on the same path of the storms that pass over the ancient Mayan capital (Tikal). Also, it is known that the Yucatan Peninsula lacks natural water resources, and the Mayan people were dependent on rainwater that accumulates in limestone streams - which is a natural stream known as a "cenote" (which is used for religious rituals in some often) - and in the huge man-made tanks called (chultunes). So the expiration of long periods of drought, for instance, those referring to the evidence, it could infect the Mayan stores of potable water to drought very quickly. (Denommee, Bentley and Droxler

The Mayans used carvings and scripts to portray themselves as an Agricultural society that relied heavily on farming. The Mayans would have had to clear more and more land to make space (Stromberg). With a such high population, if something had happened to the food supply, the Mayan population would have fallen, and later, the culture, which is another theory (Perl 14). It was argued that the Code didn’t actually portray anything about the downfall of Mayan Civilization and didn’t accurately portray Maya. As most of Mayan Agriculture did not need terracing, something that is usually used in a purely agricultural society, and that since only a small amount were found in Mayan ruins, Mayan societies could not have structured intensive agriculture and the scripts that portrayed that were untrue, and merely emphasizing a particular aspect of Mayan culture (Culbert…

Along a small creek located 500 miles south of Santiago, the most well preserved site of a possible pre-Clovis civilization was found. The remnants of at least twelve wooden structures, hundreds of stone artifacts, medicinal plants, and mastodon bones were found preserved in the peat bog. Despite these findings, it took the archeological community over twenty years to validate the site. In 1997, a group of archeologists sponsored by The Dallas Museum of Natural History visited the site and confirmed its authenticity. Through their observations, all agreed that this site pre-dated the New Mexico discovery by over a thousand years. This confirmation by these archeologists had changed the near 70 year belief that the earliest record of human existence in the Americas was now in Monte Verde,…
