The Masque Of The Red Death By Edgar Allan Poe

Death is shown through many different aspects of life. Anyone can die in a different way and it affects the people around them. The short story “The Masque of the Red Death” is about these wealthy people having a party in a prince’s castle. The castle has 7 different rooms that all represent something different. With the first room, room 1 representing life and the last room, room seven representing death. At the end, all of the people at the party get killed by the “Red Death” and it shows that even if people are wealthy, no one can escape death. Poe creates an allegory of human life throughout the castle. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Poe expresses that no matter how wealthy someone is, no one can escape the fate of death. Through his portrayal of the castle, room 1, and room 7.
A strong and lofty wall girdled in. This wall had gates of iron” (Poe 1). This quote shows that the castle is a magnificent building and is very secure. It has gated walls around it so no one can get in, and it is built to the prince's liking and it is secure. Although it is secure and gated off, the people in the castle get killed by the “Red Death”. This shows that no one can escape death, even if they are wealthy. In the “Masque of the Red Death” Poe uses the castle to show the false safety that the magnificent structure displays. Another symbol Poe uses in the “Masque of the Red Death” is room 1, the blue room to represent life. In the story Poe uses room one to display life and he says, “That at the eastern extremity was hung, for example, in blue—and vividly blue were its windows” (Poe 2). This quote from Poe shows that the Blue Room is on the eastern side of the castle. This is one way to represent life because of the sun. When the sun rises, it rises in the East and sets in the
