Call me obtuse but athletes don't fit the bill. Dmetri Kakmi believes that a hero has to have a long lasting impact on the community and the world to be a hero. “They are merely men and women of ability, individuals who excel in a chosen field but have no lasting impact. If I had to name two athletes who deserve to be called heroes, they would be Cathy Freeman and Nicky Winmar.” Dmitri states. The author says that Cathy Freeman and Nicky Winmar are heros because they stood up for their rights (they are professional athletes) and they achieved great things after they did. In this article Dmetri tells the readers what his definition of a hero is “For me, a hero is someone whose personal inspiration, fortitude, actions and beliefs contribute to the betterment of this thing we call civilisation.”. This means that someone has to make a bigger impact on the society than just being really good at sport. This disputes the Tim Cahill article, that says that a sportsperson who is really good at what they do can be a hero.
