The Marching Hawks
The sounds of “Daytripper” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” filled the streets of Marshalltown, Saturday morning. The Marching Hawks performed in the annual Oktemberfest Grand Parade, playing the tunes of the well-known group, the Beatles. The Marching Hawks perform in this parade every year to show off the talents of our band and to receive a rank in the 1A division. This year, the band performed part of their marching show, the L-S fight song, and a drum cadence. The Marching Hawks earned second place in division 1A. “Students rose to the challenge of marching at various paces while performing three different tunes and a drum cadence. The color guard lead the band with their challenging, original routines written by the students themselves. I …show more content…
Only 12 out of the 17 members played instruments in the band on Saturday. Three of these members were of the color guard. Bret Stravers and Noah Johnson, middle school band member, were in charge of carrying the L-S band banner in front of the band. Drum major, Senior Mariah Vos lead the band through the long, hot parade. Vos commented, “It was a good learning experience because we are a young band. It went better than I thought it would.”
The color guard put together their own routines that were performed at the parade and at football games. “It was very hot outside, but I enjoyed doing the color guard routines,” said Junior Caitlyn Bartholomew, Color Guard member. The Marching Hawks were one of ten bands that performed on Saturday. Other bands included Marshalltown, Grinnell, and East Marshall. In total, there were 121 entries in the parade. The parade started at 10:00 a.m. and ended around 12:00 p.m. The parade route itself was a little over an hour and the band was sweating before it even started. With temperatures in the 90’s, the band appreciated the well-deserved water at the end of the parade. “I enjoyed the experience but my favorite part was finally getting to take off the quads and my uniform and just sit,” commented Andrea Bogaard,

Color guard is the visual and the non musical part of a marching band show. Color guard consists of spinning either a three and one half pound rifle or a five and one half foot flag outside, striving for perfection and consistency. The season starts in the summer and is continued through the fall (football season). The enduring practices and heat makes it difficult for some people to give it their all, but at the same time it also helps you to push yourself. If someone does not wish to commit or be the best that they can, they will not survive in marching band color guard. During marching competition the color guard performs the show that they performed during the season and the guard gets judged based on their performance with the band. Also before and after the marching band puts on their show the guard sits in the stands with the band and dances with the band as they play different songs.…

Dear Principle Spencer, Associate Principal Lee, and Athletic Director Fry: You do so much for this school. The goal of success for all students is incredibly apparent through your actions. It is obvious that the football team is amazing, and so are the other sports. They all put forth hard work, and earn their greatness. But you are neglecting a major part of home football games: the marching band. The Turpin Marching Band is one of, if not the biggest team in the school, with 150 members. These people train just as hard as the football team. I can tell you with experience, with how many times I’ve pushed a heavy synth cart through the mud, or up the hill to the stadium like King Sisyphus’ boulder in the underworld. I’ve marched so hard I…

The 30th annual MSU Pow-Wow of Love was held on March 16, 2013. Arriving at Jenison Fieldhouse around 7.35pm, I found myself breaking one of the rules. I entered the building from the east entrance - where the entrance was reserved just for the dancers. I then walked towards the dance arena, where the crowd gathered.…

<br>George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of "leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true". His certainty that it was true was because he believed there was no greater dream than his. His students were just as confident and in response, they played their hearts out for them. Even the students with "no talent played on guts alone" for Helmholtz.…

In just four exceptionally brief years, our school’s “beloved” marching band has been taught by several instructors whom all led us through the competitions, but only one has ever managed to bring the band to championships and obtain first in state. His name is Dan Adams. It was only his first year as head instructor and yet he was the toughest out of all of them. Never in my life have I been pushed so hard and inspired so deeply to practice harder in music and in marching. Dan possessed the experience required to get our band back in shape and he had the trophies to prove it. I admire Dan because he knew exactly how to inspire the band and me in order to unlock our full potential.…

Before game days we have a special tradition to march grove street dancing to the band to get hyped up. This being the homecoming game, the cheer team, dance team, band, sororities/fraternities were all in this parade to celebrate. The cheerleaders were close to the front of the parade so once we got to the end of the parade, we were able to line the street and watch the rest of the parade go by.…

I have attended this event in two prior occasions. The first one was quite disappointed because it did not meet with my own definition of a parade. I am from a country where parades are big and important events, and which are seen as a representation of our culture and traditions. The first homecoming parade I watched was a brief chain of trucks full of students cheering in non-understandable…

Next came the multitude of high school bands and auxiliaries lumbering, deafeningly this way. With the drum major perspiring under the intense heat, the woodwinds gently blowing into their delicate instruments, also the brass’ powerful music notes, and ending the band is the intimidating drum line. “Go Team!” screeched the spirited cheerleaders as they launched one another into stunts after stunts. Finally, the diligent, dependable supporters of the school brought up the rear.…

The different performances are all traditional, but merge and fade in together very well. This shows that the different culture, tradition and origin don't matter, as they are all together on one parade and with the same audience. The different colours and symbolism of their costumes were all fit in together very nicely. This may be said that the colours of fabric are pieced together to form people with different background, but of one people.…
