The Man In The Water Analysis

Out of the Ordinary Is everyone capable of being a hero someday? Everyday there are multiple deaths from a variety of things; natural disasters, vehicle accidents, or suicide are just a few. Saving some or just one of the many might constitute a heroic person. These heroes are unprepared and shine in the heat of the moment. They don’t know when something tragic is going to happen, they just have a slight instinct that guides them in the best decision within the situation. On January 13, 1982, a disaster happened and a hero emerged. An Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into a bridge in Washington, D.C. and landed in the Potomac River. Fortunately, emergency response teams arrived immediately and some victims were saved. One unknown man who was stranded in the freezing water displayed a sense of heroism and his story is still told today. According to Roger Rosenblatt’s The Man in the Water, this man proved to be courageous and selfless as he gave his life to save other sufferer.
A good hero is someone who doesn’t crumble in a tense situation. From what the writer was able to see, this nameless savior was able to keep calm easily in this extreme situation. It’s almost unimaginable the gruesome or horrific scenes, but the fact that the ‘man in the water’ was able to stay in control of the situation is phenomenal. “This man was described by Usher and Windsor as appearing alert and in control,” as described by Rosenblatt in The Man in the Water. This small characteristic must have benefitted the many survivors who he assisted to safety. As they met with his calm helpful face, their mind might have been able to escape the horror it was experiencing. Clearly, the unanimous hero in the water during the tragic disaster was able to maintain a great
