' The Machine Stops, By E. M. Forster
E.M. Forster nearly predicted the future when he voiced this quote in his short story The Machine Stops, “But Humanity, in its desire for comfort, had over-reached itself. It had exploited the riches of nature too far. Quietly and complacently, it was sinking into decadence, and progress had come to mean the progress of the Machine.”
I have nothing to offer anyone except my own bitter delusion.
Limp bodies lay scattered all over the incommodious ground. Their eyes bloodshot and hollow. A part of my already dying mind shattered as I gazed upon the disfigured bodies lying around me. They looked like monsters with their ankles twisted in an unusually gruesome manner facing sideways and their heads looked as though someone had tried to ram them

I’m contemplating the fact that we are doomed for how could we ever outrun and escape this horrendous beast when suddenly, I hear what sounds like gunshots which are then followed by utter silence. Maybe I am imagining it, maybe the grit managed to get us and the silence is alerting me that I have simply ceased to exist but then…I see …show more content…
My first instinct is to run as we have learnt not to trust anyone but then I see his lips curve into a smile and somehow I know that we can trust him. He reaches where we are standing and we immediately begin thanking him for rescuing us from the grit. He tells us that he was just doing his duty and I ask if he is a military man but his only response is a sharp laugh.
Then, he begins telling us that he is part of a furtive research group that helps people like us. He tells us the object he holds is a special weapon that puts the grits to sleep for a few moments and so we have to start moving before the grit awakens.
After we are as far away from the grit as we can possibly get, our savior continues telling us about his research group. They call themselves the aspirants and for years have been attempting to make a serum to reverse the effects of grits. They have failed continually but keep on trying as the rest of the remaining world has lost all hope and so they cannot afford to do so. Someone needs to be the light in this dark period.
He then, to our absolute joy, informs us that there is a safe zone situated not far from here and we should go there. We ask him to lead us there but he refuses and says he needs to go save other people from the same fate as us and so after giving us a few brief directions, our guardian angel turns and leaves us

I am gripped by fear at the sudden noise. Curse this eye! I can’t see anything in the blackness of this room with two good eyes, much less one. I’m too scared to move. Is it a thief come to steal my treasures? And what of the lad? Surely I would have been awoken by a struggle. The youth would have defended me with his life. Maybe it’s just a mouse crossing the floor. All seems quiet now.…

In both articles, “'Rise of the Machines' is Not a Likely Future” by Michael Littman(2015) and “The Machines are coming” by Zeynep Tufekci (2015), the writers are aware of the advancements of technology, however the conclusion they arrived are very different. While Littman believes that it’s impossible for artificial intelligent or robotic technologies to takeover humanity, Tufekci on the other hand believes that human labor are being usurped by the advancement of technology.…

You could almost hear the souls of my fellow men screaming for mercy as the beast devoured every scrap of their bodies. He went through man by man by man in a matter of minutes with the most utterly disgusting noise of horrible manners. I could hear him getting closer and closer to where the place I lay on the cold, chilling ground, praying that I will not be joining the deceased souls of my fellow…

I shall have some material comforts and live a happy life. I will probably have a house of my own. I wonder what kind of magnificent television sets we will have then. There will be a whole lot of channels to choose from. If the satellite system is perfected, we shall be able to view television programs from all over the world. I love music. I expect in 20 years, the degree of fidelity in electronic sound reproduction to be so high that I can actually listen to great, realistic concerts in my own room. At the rate we are miniaturizing electronic contraptions; I expect my entire sound system to be the size of a match box. My telephone will have that gadget that will enable me to see the person I am talking to. I wonder if domestic lighting will be the same. I can safely predict that my kitchen will probably look like some high-class science laboratory. There will be numerous labour-saving devices that will ease our domestic burden. I feel so many changes will occur. I wonder what my car will look like.…

A slight breeze blew throughout the dandy forest, swaying the stiff lifeless trees and blowing the black stained leaves across my bare white feet. As I stumbled across the dead landscape, a slight fog swam around blending in with the increasingly falling snow. Hundreds of dark wood surrounding me seemed to slowly cave in, creating a narrow cave-like passage. An eerie feeling swept over me, and I stopped completely, analysing every detail around me. The smog became thicker, blinding the scenery and almost completely covering my vision. I sensed an inhuman presence watching me, and flinched whenever a snapping sound came from a faraway distance. I slowly turned around and began pacing in the direction I came from. The fog smothered me but I kept running,…

Walking upon a dead decomposing body is like spending the night in a haunted house. At first there is speculation but eventually your stomach ties in knots. In seconds the smell hits you like a ton of bricks smashing your nose, legs gradually weaken, your eyes start to water, electrical charges run down you spine, you heart pounds like a jack hammer. Lying in the position from the victim's last breath of…

Have you ever wondered what the future would look like? Everyone's idea of what the future will look like is probably along the guidelines of flying cars, hover boards, and robots that do your bidding but have you ever thought of the impact all this technology will have on our society. In Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian" he describes a world in which society is dominated by technology and how having all this technology around will lead to conformity, lack of imagination, and individualism. The overall theme throughout this short story is that if mankind loses its humanity then mankind may as well cease to exist.…

This work opens with a vivid comparison between dead bodies to people vacationing on cruises, “Most of your time is spent lying on your back. The brain has shut down. The flesh begins to soften” (pg. 9). These being the first lines of the book I was not sure what to expect. I did, however, expect that the author would have a difficult time writing a…

With the rapid advancement of technology, it has deeply engaged to the modern lifestyles of humans, which refer to ‘technology is the current world’. With regard to this, there are social concerns to the effect of the power of technology in far future in affecting the behaviour of humans. Ray Bradbury discovers this principle in his short stories of ‘The Veldt’, ‘Zero Hour’, and ‘Marionettes Inc.’. The three stories are about how the creation of humans, the imagination of individuals and the conception of robots outlines the concerns of technology in the future to be raised. This three short stories perfectly described of how the invention of technology in the future has raised the social concerns towards the behaviours of the individual.…

Considering the questions raised about the advancement of humanity through technology, two opposing positions are generally discussed. One group accepts the path of human evolution and transformation, and Ray Kurzweil was one of them. He believed that one day in the future we will reach the point of “Singularity” defined as “a future period during which the pace of technological change will be…

I did not know then how much was ended. When I look back now from this high hill of my old age, I can still see the butchered women and children lying heaped and scattered all along the crooked gulch as plain as when I saw them with eyes still young. And I can see that something else died there in the bloody mud, and was buried in the blizzard. A…

What I’d like to do this week is talk about another popular credo, one that plays a very large role in blinding people nowadays to the shape of the future looming up ahead of us all just now. In an interesting display of synchronicity, it came up in a conversation I had while last week’s essay was still being written. A friend and I were talking about the myth of progress, the facile and popular conviction that all human history follows an ever-ascending arc from the caves to the stars; my friend noted how disappointed he’d been with a book about the future that backed away from tomorrow’s challenges into the shelter of a comforting thoughtstopper: “Technology will always be with us.”…
