The lottery, many people are playing it all around the world. In the United States, people, who have a little bit of money in their pocket, will play the lottery. Now the lottery has changed from a tool for financing the public to a tool for making money for the merchant. In the article “ The Lottery is for Losers ” by Laurence Berkley, the author points out, people forgot the main point for lottery is financing the public, but now they only see the impossible benefit for their self. There are three main points in the article. First, lottery is not making any economic sense.Secondly, people have the herd mentality and follow others who get a smart reward from the lottery. Lastly, winning lottery is not making any sense in reality. Lottery is a product that not making any sense for the economic. The possibility for winning the jackpot is very small. In a public survey by Harvard, the investigator asks questions to people who play the lottery. 75% of people who participate the survey are getting nothing back by spending many moneys on the lottery. A few people get a small amount of payback by spend thousand dollars per year. Now, million of people in American spend billion of dollars a year hoping to beat these odds. No one ever wins the biggest price of the lottery because it’s just not designed for winning. Even someone wins it, but it just was a small reward. Then more people start follow the winners to join in the lottery playing. This kind of conformist mentality reminds me a Chinese news that I read before. A woman falls in the river from the edge of the river, but no one tries to help this woman. Many people stand there and watch, all of them are thinking someone will help her. When a soldier who having vocation walk by and notices what happen, only him jumps down to the river and get her back from the Grim Reaper. After he jumps down the river, people, who stand and watch, start to help. This is how the herd behavior functions in people’s mind. They think...
