The Lost Mistress
The Lost Mistress

We have read the poem The Lost Mistress by Robert Browning who was an English poet and one of the best known Victorian poets. He has ability to create an image, a scene, which is not simply vivid and moving, but also somehow, psychologically accurate. A situation that can happen to everybody, and it almost happens to everyone sooner or later.
The poem is about a break-up, right after it happened, when the boy cannot even believe that the girl has just broken up with him. He does not talk about it like in usual break-up poems, all sad and sorrow, instead he is shocked and wants to make it back, before the girl said anything. He doesn’t want her to break up with him, he wants to make it sound like a small misunderstanding, and continue like it never happened. At first he repeats the sentence, just to himself; he does not want to believe it. The writer is talking in short sentences, but these are just enough to lay before us the entire history of the romance and its possible future
After that he starts to talk about birds and leaves, trying to change the subject for a more everyday-like conversation about the weather. Pretending he has not heard what he just repeated, they can continue the conversation and talk about the weather. I think it must be the end of autumn according to “leaf-buds on the vine are woolly” and “the red turns gray” and winter always means the end of something. But he is hopeful. That tomorrow they can meet again and he can hold her hand. Saying that they will be friends, mere friends, but sticking to his point such as “only a thought stronger” and “or so very little longer”. But deep down he knows that despite everything, the world goes on and it will be winter.
The reader is positioned like someone listening to them in the park, or where it happened, hearing out their conversation making them feel that could happen to them; that, in fact, it may already have happened. At first the reader can hear the girl breaking up

This Victorian poem is about the narrator (a fallen woman), the Lord and Kate. It is a ballad which tells the story from the narrator’s perspective about being shunned by society after her ‘experiences’ with the lord. The poem’s female speaker recalls her contentment in her humble surroundings until the local ‘Lord of the Manor’ took her to be his lover. He discarded her when she became pregnant and his affections turned to another village girl, Kate, whom he then married. Although the speaker’s community condemned the speaker as a ‘fallen’ woman, she reflects that her love for the lord was more faithful than Kate’s. She is proud of the son she bore him and is sure that the man is unhappy that he and Kate remain childless. Some readers think that she feels more betrayed by her cousin than the lord. This poem is a dramatic monologue written in the Victorian era.…

Narrators are particularly significant in Robert Browning’s poems, such as in ‘My Last Duchess’ where the Duke’s voice reveals his cold and egotistical nature - creating sympathy for his late wife. An illustration of this is when he chillingly concludes “I gave commands / Then all smiles stopped together”. Superior and detached, his absolute need for control and sense of power is acute. Furthermore, the militancy in his voice is demonstrated through the assertive choice of verb “to command” and also further reflected in his short and abrupt and segmented sentence structure. At this point, the narrative returns us to the present, as the Duke appears to swiftly onto the next topic; his next wife, creating a particularly dangerous and psychopathic character.…

The poem,¨You Think You Won By Getting Rid Of Me, When In fact You Lost The day You let me Go¨ by Mandie Michelle Sanders is about a girl who found out that her boyfriend had cheated on her. The poet uses what looks to be a free verse poem. It doesn't really have a rhyme scheme. The message that the writer put out is that dating can be dangerous and heartbreaking. Even the most trustworthy people could break your heart in an instant. People have to be careful about who they trust.…

This poem is essentially the speaker’s parting words to his love. We see that he is very conflicted about his life. Even as he looks death in the eyes he's unsure as to what comes next. He is weary of his life. He feels dead inside or perhaps he was born as a stillborn whose body had survived, adapting to the harsh world but his spirit still stuck inside the womb. He feels resentful that death has not come quickly, it was as if some force was pulling strings to keep his alive. So it's easier just to take thing into his own hand. He’s wondering if people will disdain and curse him before they mourn him. He feels calm at the end of his note, if it's in his head or head he was not sure. At the end he wholeheartedly believes that the grim reaper…

First of all, the narrator themself criticizes the quality of their work before having witnessed the couple in love: “Sometimes I feel I’m getting somewhere with this poetry, and other times it looks to me pretty awful” (Lively 27). The narrator is acknowledging that their work isn’t perfect and that it is missing something. After the narrator has witnessed the story that has unfolded before them they decide that their poetry doesn’t do any justice to their topic: “I never did go on with that poem. I tore it up, as far as it had got; I wasn’t so sure about that conversation, that there could even be one, or not like I’d been imagining, anyway” (Lively 31). Now, the author has seen that maybe they don’t know what they’re doing. They recognize that their work is faulty, the new information that they have learned from the couple most likely to blame. Where the narrator may have already been a great poet, the experiences they have witnessed have changed the way they perceive things and perhaps even made them a better…

The chorus of the song is the most remarkable for it was very deep. Even an explanation from a student like me is not enough. “I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you.” With this statement, we can assume that the man really loves his woman and she was a great loss, not only to their relationship but also to his life. The next lines of the chorus say that the man was really sorry for the reasons of their break-up. For him, it indeed was a terrible mistake and yet, he still wishes for their love to continue.…

Browning’s poem “Porthyria’s Lover” tells a story of a murder seen through the eyes of Porphyria’s lover- the murderer. It takes place on a rainy night, in the speaker’s home, where he sits alone in the dark until Porphyria’s arrival. She lights the fire place, takes off her garments and sits by her lover whispering how much he loves him. He then decides to strangle her with her hair, after which he lays her head once again on his shoulder and they sit as they are for the rest of the night. The poem might be influenced by Browning’s own inner thoughts and feelings, since during his lifetime he has been less appreciated as an author compared to his wife.…
