Raleigh eventually gained approval from the royal crown to delegate an English colony in the unfamiliar land. Seven ships- and two flagships- departed from England on April 9, 1585. In total, there were 500 hundred men, including Manteo and Wanchese. Months thereafter passed and on June 26, 1585, the ships landed a mere 80 miles southwest of Roanoke. Unaware of the treacheries to navigate around the alien world, the Tiger, one of the quainter ships, ran aground and a generous portion of the cargo was lost. Once the seven ships ultimately dropped anchor into the shallow water surrounding the island, the Indians had no advanced emotions towards the English. Earlier in the year, the tribes witnessed and entire solar eclipse, a comet upon the return…
John White was finally returning back to Roanoke Island after a three year long supply run to the mother land of England. White a colonist leader of the Roanoke Island settlement had high hopes for a friendly welcoming from his daughter and granddaughter, but he never would have guess that silence would be the scariest sound of them all.…
The Dutch company profited from fur trade, but not many people came so they let a variety of people in the colony. More Dutch, Germans, French, Scandinavians, and other Europeans settled the area. They also included Africans, free and enslaved. They were friendlier with the Natives, unlike the English. They traded them furs and the Dutch were smart enough not to anger the powerful Iroquois, however the Dutch did have fights with smaller tribes over land and trade rivalries.…
In particular, Keith display’s the peoples hard work to build out Jamestown. Out of the people, you can see the hard work in the community by them building houses and other buildings in the town. Colonial Williamsburg is a location that recreated what life was like back in the 18th century. There were four significant buildings to colonial time, the Capitol, Bruton Parish Church, The Governor’s palace, and the magazine. The building includes monetary worth to colonists’ during historical time, value to present people who visit the building, and can relate to the motto, “That the future may learn from the past”. When visitors visit the Capitol they can experience how people faced with charges, receive their punishment and how decisions provided improved colonists’ lives. People can also experience a visit to the fancy capitol that has walls lined with pictures and has beautiful staircases. However, visitors step inside a building that…
The article Taking Sides has two very interesting points of view. On one side you have Edmund Morgan that makes the argument that the settlement of Jamestown was a fiasco more than a plan. The other side has Karen Kupperman taking the stance that the whole Jamestown settlement was an experiment of trial and error. They both make very compelling arguments and there is truth to both sides. Although I would have to say I agree more with Karen Kupperman on the fact that it was more of an experiment than anything else.…

The Roanoke colony story has been around since 1590 because in 1587 was when the colony roanoke was founded. Which there was the first baby to be born to english parents in North America. John White who was apart of the conlony went to get supplies for his people so they could get by with their colony. So as he went on his journey and in 1590 when he returned he came back to a colony hat was no longer a colony. His people he had left behind were just gone as if they just disapeared. I believe that a colony of other people found their colony and they joined together but then something must have been arranged thinking maybe John was not going to com back.…
We all know the Disney story of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith growing up as a little girl I thought the magical story of their relationship and what happened between the settlers and Native Americans was true. As I got older people would tell me that story’s about history are not always true and that made me sad. But now I read that a majority was true and the little girl inside me is joyful due to this. The lessons and how the early colonists of Jamestown applied those lessons to become better and survive started the colonization of the new world. If Jamestown was not a success it would have taken longer and history would not be the same as it is now. The lessons that I believe the colonists learned in the early years of the Jamestown…

The video that we watched about the Lynchburg Colony in a word was horrifying. I had a few other observations other than that however. The main thing that shocked me was that I had never heard of this before. I don’t understand how people could just treat people like they were not even human. I guess that I have heard of things happening like this, but never in the United States and to this extreme. To treat people like they are worthless just back in the 1980s boggles my mind. The entire time I watched the video I felt disgusted and I really couldn’t believe it. One could tell from the people that were interviewed that this horrible thing they had gone through had left a lasting impact on their lives and had scarred them. Their countenance and the way they talked almost brought me to tears. When the video talked about how Hitler used the United States’ idea of sterilization for Germany, it made me think a little bit if whether that was true or if the movie wanted to get more of a rise out of people. It is hard to know the truth, especially when most people didn’t know about this colony.…
