Of all the injustices that are bestowed upon mankind, none are greater than the ones inflicted by our own species of apathy towards poverty and the hardships of our brothers. Mother nature also inflicts much damage to mankind in instances such as Hurricane Katrina. Steinbeck gives a view of human frailties and strengths from many different perspectives in The Grapes of Wrath, just as Josh Neufeld does in New Orleans After the Deluge. This book demonstrates how people can overcome destitution, team up to find solutions, and provide protection and security in times of trouble, similar to Aaron Ralston’s experience while trapped hiking. Steinbeck introduces people who are hard working and honest, that reach out selflessly with compassion towards others. However, not everyone reacts to austerity and oppression in the same way. Large groups of people can cause suspicion to outsiders. Ignorant people can be paralyzed by an incomprehensible fear of the unknown, and react with cruelty, prejudice, and hatred toward newcomers that are different from them. This irrational behavior can lead to unnecessarily violence and driving others to the ground, as well as becoming an alcoholic, which happened to Frank McCourt’s father in Angela’s Ashes. Depicted in this book is capitalism at its worst; landowners, corporations, and government officials exploit the poor and abuse the downtrodden.…

The movie is have many inaccurate elements that are not true to what really happened. The fictional romantic affair along with the overall exaggeration that Miller’s incoperates, was necessary to follow the Relationship of Abigail and Proctor. The most significant ways is through the innacurate historical events that are added to the movie, that ties…
Being part of a community is something everyone should relate to, yet hard times make people feel alone and alienated. They feel as if they can relate to no one, and no one has the same problems as them. However, in The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck writes about a family of migrants who lose everything. They are left homeless with no money, and are forced to travel to California, where they hope for work. Despite all their hardships they even grow closer as they learn the importance of family and community. They realise that life is not only about personal happiness, but the happiness and wellbeing of others. In The Grapes of Wrath, it is seen that hard times bring people together. This can be seen through the Joad family, the migrant community and how people’s thoughts and actions change throughout the story.…
Honor means the showing of respect or an intense sense of ethical conduct (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/honor). The Last of the Mohicans was set during a time of honor and sacrifice and those with great passion gave it their all. Honor is shown through love of family and brotherhood throughout the film. There are many instances where honor is an issue in the film. The French offered a cease fire to the English when they found out no reinforcements were coming to help them. The colonists’ demonstrated honor to their families. The Native Americans honored the agreement between the English and the colonists, and the British demonstrated honor by surrendering for the sake of their men.…
Grapes of Wrath shouldn’t be on a list of recommendation list for high school readers. Although it is important for people to read, this piece of classic literature, it isn’t something every high school student should read. The subject matter isn’t the issue, it’s the understanding of the desperation during the time period, that’s most high school students don’t have. Many students in high school haven’t yet learned about the dust bowl, and it helps to have a basic knowledge of the time period when you read a piece of historical fiction. With information of the time, it’s easier to understand the feeling of desperation and devastating fact that many lost their livelihoods and homes. This comprehension may happen for some in high school, but this would be a better book to read in college. Then the reader would’ve gone through American history in high school and possibly a more in depth class in college. It would also be easier to understand different messages and concepts in the book. For example, when Rose of Sharon breast-feeds a starving man, it symbolic of rebirth and the prosperity that will come, along with the struggle of humanity, and how they have nothing but are so selfless to help others. This symbolism is hard to grasp as a high school student, but would be easier for a college student whom might have taken a few philosophy courses. Then they have an understanding and awareness of symbolism embedded into pieces of literature. Overall, Grapes of Wrath is important for everyone to read, but just not in high school; it should be read when the reader is older and can see the symbolism and knows the background of the time.…
Mockingbirds are placid, blissful, and vulnerable animals. They do not harm anything or anyone. Killing a mockingbird resembles sin to many people throughout the entire novel. In To Kill a Mockingbird many characters can be characterized as being a mockingbird, including: Tom Robinson, Arthur (Boo) Radley, and Charles Baker Harris (Dill). Mockingbirds do not deserve any form of harm or pain in any way, shape, or form. Innocent humans do not deserve to be abused or threatened by anyone or anything.…
Racism has been around since the beginning of time. Basically if you had a skin tone darker than the shade of white, you were inferior. Times have now changed, but there are remnants of this subject everywhere, even in film. The movie Birth of a Nation is considered one of the greatest films of all time, even with these themes. AMC’s Filmsite even has it listed within the 100 Greatest Films of All Time. Another movie with the some of the same themes is Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature as Birth of a Nation, but it does deserve to be higher in the canon. I do believe that Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature because it is a comedy with crude humor and because it has a black sheriff as the protagonist.…
