The Landlady Roald Dahl Essay

In the story the Landlady Roald Dahl wrote, young Billy was looking for a bed and breakfast to stay. When he found one, the lady seems really sweet and thoughtful, and could be a grandmother to him. She was really prepared for someone to come and it wasn't expensive at all, but thats where things started to get weird. Things aren't always what they seem, the first impression was good, but maybe too good. One problem was that Billy needed a place to stay. He was in luck because he found a bed and breakfast for a good price. “How much do you charge?” “Five and sixpence a night, including breakfast.”(2) That was less than half of what Billy was willing to pay. She even offered to lower it if it was too much. She gave an incredibly good price and still offered to lower it, thats how much she wanted him to stay there.
She gave a lot of complements that were really weird in their situation. She was a creepy old lady who seamed really nice and did a bunch of nice things to make him feel welcomed. She was waiting at the door for him, went out of her way to make him feel welcomed, and gave him a lot of weird complements. “How amusing, “ she said. “But come over here now, dear, and sit down beside me on the sofa and I’ll give you a nice cup of tea and a ginger biscuit before you go to bed.”(4) A third and final problem was that Billy didn't trust his instincts and stayed with the women after all the things she said and did. She was right on top of every little thing and didn't let anything slip by going unnoticed. She waited behind him when he was signing the book, she waited for him on the other side of the door, and she waited on him in every way that she could that made him feel a little weird. She could never remember his name and this should have been a good reason to leave but Billy didn't trust his instincts so he stayed with a creepy old lady. “It’s Weaver,” Billy said.
