In the book titled, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, she describes different techniques in how she goes about writing. Lamott mentions how much she procrastinates before writing drafts because sometimes panic sets in and also how her mind wanders at times. For example, she states that “I think about someone I’m really annoyed with, or some financial problem that is driving me crazy, and decide that I must resolve this before I get down to today’s work” (17). Although I do not write all that often, if I have a task at hand that is due in a timely fashion, I find that I too will procrastinate before getting to that task. I actually have done so in this first assignment. Feeling uncertain on whether or not I am doing this correctly is a reason I believe…

Patricia Cornwell, a famous writer, once said, that “I believe the root of all evil is the abuse of power”. To receive power in one’s life, they bring out strong emotions, such as fear or guilt to persuade the person to obey their commands. But, these people are simply exercising their power, and only have a relationship with them asymmetrically. The person will authority has the ability to limit the choices of another, and uses physically or psychologically pain only to pursue their goal. A person can rightfully deserve power, or obtain power by acting savagely. Either way, having authority in society can force people to act inhuman, and make people suffer dramatically. Similarly, in the article “Simulated prison in ‘71 Showed a Fine Line…

The Civil Rights Movement that began in the late 1950's was a struggle to bring full civil rights and equality under the law to primarily African American citizens of the United States. In the end, African-Americans won basic rights long denied to them, as well as inspired other discriminated groups to fight for their own rights, which had a deep effect on American society. Many blacks took part in this movement, whether it was through protesting or holding demonstrations. However, some blacks used writing as a means of contributing. James Baldwin published Stranger in the Village as a means of expressing his views of African-American racism. As a result, their efforts helped set the foundation for equal rights among blacks for generations to come. Although the basic needs were met, there is still a lot to be done today.…

The Landlady was written by Roald Dahl, and was published in 1959. The story was written in a hospitable setting, that seems perfectly normal until the true intentions of the pleasing little bed and breakfast were revealed. The main character is completely unaware, and is at ease alone in the setting with the villain. The antagonist seems perfectly normal, though a little bit dotty, but the main character passes it off as loneliness. Later, though the side character complete true intentions were never foiled, the reader seems to realize what she means to do with the main character. This particular style of writing uses foreshadowing a great deal, but the most distinctive style that the author uses on this story is how he leaves the story open ended, allowing for the reader’s imagination to end the story.…

William Golding explores the vulnerability of society in a way that can be read on many different levels. A less detailed look at the book, Lord of the Flies, is a simple fable about boys stranded on an island. Another way to comprehend the book is as a statement about mans inner savage and reverting to a primitive state without societies boundaries. By examining the Lord of the Flies further, it is revealed that many themes portray Golding's views, including a religious persecution theme.…

Life is a Story “Live life to the fullest because you only get to live it once.” This quote provided by Ernest Hemingway perfectly epitomizes the main message in the play Our Town, written by Thornton Wilder. The author makes a point of saying that life is divided into three differential parts: Birth and Daily Life, Love and Marriage, and, of course, Death. Occasionally, this trinity of life may be unappreciated by one until it is too late.…

    1. Since there is only one girl character ( the narrator) and one boy character(the narrator’s younger brother) in “ Boys and Girls ,” why do you think Alice Munro uses plural words in the title? For example, back then women were assign the task of child care, food preparation, as well as taking care of the husband whiles the men perform most activities that require physical strength likes farm work and providing for the family.…
