The Lady with the Pet Dog

The role that women play in society has always been a tumultuous battle, since patriarchal rule existed from the beginning of time and still does to this day. Even though many women in today’s society have accomplished amazing achievements that were never thought possible in the past, some things have not changed. There are certain rules and guidelines that women have to be abide by, especially decades ago when women didn’t have rights as they do now. However, in holy matrimony when one takes vows to be monogamous for life, the Golden Rule is you don’t opt out and become intimate with another person other than your spouse that is considered adultery. There are some people who feel as if cheating on their spouse can be justified if there are having problems in their marriage. It can be an abusive marriage, it can be a marriage holding on for financial gain or they may want to stay in the marriage to conform to society’s rules and have an image to behold. Deception and immorality may also be in the eye of the beholder. Married people may feel the need to appease the masses by creating a façade as if happily married, however, may feel content outside of their marriage trying to fill a void they may lack at home. When that married person has feelings and emotions for that outsider then he/she lives a dual life. Secretly, there is a true genuine love that exists that is not exposed to the spouse. Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive! Sooner later the truth is going to have to come out and what happens in the dark will come to light. In some cases where adultery has been committed, it will probably be a secret taken to the grave. Many women have their own reasons to feel the need for infidelity. In the short story of “The Storm” by Kate Chopin the main female character, Calixta, feels she has reason to act on her inhibitions.
