The Kite Runner: Notes
1. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay to win baba. Despite his efforts, Amir never really succeeds in winning his father's love. Do you agree?

In ‘The Kite Runner’, Khaled Hosseini depicts Amir as someone who tries very hard to get something that he desires, however does not receive it. In this case, Amir did not really ‘win’ Baba’s love. Through his early childhood, Amir and Baba’s contrast in each other caused much of the problem, and after the kite flying tournament, Amir’s guilt had driven them further apart. However in America, Baba truly begins to appreciate Amir for who he is and not who he expects him to be.
PARA 1
• • In Afghanistan, Baba’s stark contrast with Amir made him look down on him and never really loved him (Amir’s love of writing and reading) He goes to soccer matches and shit and pretends he likes it but he doesnt - “I would not think that he was my son” - “The problem, of course, was that Baba saw the world in black and white. And he got to decide what was black and what was white. You can’t love a person who lives that way without fearing him too. Maybe even hating him a little. “
• “Baba and I lived in the same house, but in different spheres of existence. Kites were the one paper thin slice of intersection between those spheres.”
-
PARA 2
• Hassan’s rape drives Amir’s relationship further with Baba even though he had given the kite to him. (Amir asking for new servants and Baba responding “ Hassan’s not going anywhere”)
• Temporary love: goes back to normal when baba remembers about ali “There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft.”
“Baba and I lived in the same house, but in different spheres of existence. Kites were the one paper thin slice of intersection between those spheres.”
• The incident drives Baba to look down on Amir again.
• Baba never loved him; instead he used him as a tool for pride and boasting. (Kite flying tournament) Baba would have never thrown me a party like that if I hadn’t won the tournament.”

PARA 3
• Even in America, Baba did not really love Amir
The news of cancer helped baba to form a relationship with amir as he knew he had to appreciate it while he was still on this earth – this was the closest to actual love and appreciation amir ever got
• Soraya and Amir’s marriage and Education and new car were because Baba transferred his love for Hassan onto Amir.
• Baba never once mentioned in America that he loved Amir
I am Moftakhir, Amir,’ he said. Proud.”
“This is the happiest day of my life”
• The way he expressed the love was not because of Baba’s love for Amir but Baba’s love for Hassan
• When Baba says he is proud of Amir as he was about to die was not because he loved Amir but because Amir had actually achieved something instead of being a coward. Also because Baba always looked down on Amir and this was the only time that Baba thought they were equal.
• Baba acknowledges that he accepted Amir but didn’t love him

All I saw was the blue kite. All I smelled was victory. Salvation. Redemption. If Baba was wrong and there was a God like they said in school, then He 'd let me win. I didn 't know what the other guy was playing for, maybe just bragging rights. But this was my one chance to become someone who was looked at, not seen, listened to, not heard. (P. 69, Par 4)Amir believes that this is his way to become better than anyone else, including his friend Hassan.…

After getting a new bike for his birthday, Khaled Hossiene had Baba say “we [Amir and Baba] could go for a ride.” It was “an invitation, but only a half-hearted one.” Even though both Amir and Baba, despite their “different spheres of existence,” tried very hard to bond, yet again would the presence of Baba’s own hypocrisy bar them from connecting. Amir’s jealousy as a kid germinated from Baba’s abuse towards Amir in conjunction with Baba’s partialness towards Hassan. As a child, Amir’s aspiration was to please Baba, and every time he tried, despite success, it did not last. After winning the kite fighting tournament, the brief bliss experienced between them disappeared when Amir asked about “getting new servants.” At most, only a temporary bridge was built between them, broken by Baba’s knowledge of Hassan’s parentage. His identity drowned again and again in Baba’s disappointment.…

Amir’s fight for Baba’s attention left him with a need to ‘fake interest for as long as possible’ even if it meant pretending he was interested in the kind of sports his father was but even these attempts were deemed feeble by his father and surely pushed them apart even more than before. His attempts at closing the gap between them, pushing aside their differences in fact influenced the events that happened afterwards, such as his need for the kite, over saving his best friend, Hassan, in the alley.…

Kemmy Nolah once said,” Be extremely careful not break someone’s heart or to cause someone great disappointment, and never put up with people that are reckless with yours. That is why you shouldn’t force yourself to have space in anyone’s life because if they know your worth, they’ll create one for you”. (Nolah) In the novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, Amirs father” Baba” is greatly responsible for determining the personality of Amir. Born without a mother and raised by his father, Amir lives with a single role model in his life who repeatedly expects more from his disappointing son. Amir is like a key while in the same way Baba is a door that has no key hole. ” With me as the glaring exception, my father molded the world around him to his liking”, (Hosseini 12). Throughout the novel Amirs character is developed in different time periods of his life involving his father. Furthermore growing up in a wealthy environment Baba did not show traits of a parent, causing Amir to betray and creates additional deceptions, which escalates Amirs life for the worst.…

Amir’s complex relationship with his father is a significant factor in his life. Baba, Amir’s father, does not understand his son, he complains to his best friend and business partner Rahim Khan about his confusion with Amir. “He’s always buried in those books or shuffling around the house like he’s lost in some dream…I wasn’t like that” Baba cannot understand why Amir does not have the same interests as he does. When Amir over heard this conversation between Baba and Rahim, it was like “Baba sounded frustrated, almost angry”. Baba is disappointed that Amir is not a replica of him; he wants a son to take over the business and keep his name intact, which is why Baba does not try to make a bond with his own son. “If I hadn’t seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I’d never believe he’s my son”. Baba is very distant from Amir because he feels that there is no real connection between himself and Amir. Amir’s Childhood was very tough on him because he was brought up without a mother, and blames himself for her death, as she died giving birth to him. Amir also lacks a proper relationship with his father in his early years. Amir makes it clear that he longs to become like Baba and for him and Baba to have that special bond and connection that fathers and sons are meant to have. Baba is an honourable man at heart; he is just unable to understand his son’s interests and neglects him because of it. Amir’s relationship with Baba is very hard on him and makes him feel like he needs to prove something to Baba, which is one thing he has always tried to do his whole life.…

Amir’s first experience of violence is when Amir wins the Kite fighting Tournament, and Hassan, runs off in pursuit of Amir’s trophy. Hassan is gone long enough to alarm Amir, who begins to search for him and once he finds him, he sees Assef, a bully, raping him. Amir at first is scared of Assef but later convinces himself by says, “Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay to win Baba (Amir’s Father) Was it a fair price?” (Hosseini 82). As Amir never helps Hassan, this shows that Amir will do anything to get Baba’s love and intention. Amir uses Hassan as a tool even though Hassan was his best friend from birth.
