The Kite Runner The book begins with Amir as a child in Kabul, Afghanistan, as he lived his life with his father, and his friend Hassan. He loved to read, and often read to Hassan. Eventually he would go on to write his own books, that he would try to show to his father, but he didn’t appreciate his son’s work. Instead his father friend Rahim Khan shows interests and supports his writing choices. One of the focused points of the story is the kite running as Amir wins the kite flying competition. Hassan runs after the fallen kite and when he retrieves it he is cornered by Asseff and his friend. He tries to defend himself, but he doesn’t have his slingshot and is beaten up and raped by Asseff. This event marked the beginning of the rift between Hassan and Amir, as Amir tries to avoid him. Amir even goes as far as framing Hassan of stealing his watch, but Hassan remaining a loyal friend lies and says he did. At this point Hassan’s father learned the truth and decides to move away. In 1980 Amir and his father escape to America during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In America, Amir grows, gets married, and goes on to become a writer. His father passes away, and Amir settles his feelings for him and his need to make his father proud. However, one day his peaceful life is ruined when he gets a call from Rahim Khan, his father’s friend who is still in Afghanistan. He calls and asks for help with Hassan. Amir, still suffering from guilt goes and meets with Rahim, where he reveals Hassan is dead. Amir is heartbroken but Rahim says Hassan had a son named Sohrab,who was at in orphanage. So Amir travels to Kabul, his childhood home, to find it in ruin under Afghanistan’s rule under the Taliban. He goes to the orphanage where the caretaker reveals the Taliban had taken him.
