The King and His Dog Once upon a time there was a king. This wasn’t just any old king though. This was King Jim. Jim was one of the smartest kings in the whole world because he learned the answers to three of life’s most important questions. That was back early in Jim’s career, about fifteen years ago. King Jim was much more mature now, and he was loved by everyone in his kingdom, and a lot of the people in surrounding Kingdoms. King Jim had a beloved dog. He had the dog since he was a puppy. Jim took the dog everywhere with him. When he gave speeches, Jim’s dog was always right there by his side. When Jim was out visiting people in the kingdom, he would always have a leash in his hand with his dog on the other end. All the people in the kingdom also loved Jim’s little dog. In fact, he may have been even more popular than Jim was. One day when Jim was out for a walk with his dog, he saw a squirrel running through the woods and ran after it. Jim tried to catch him, but his dog ran way faster than him so he could not keep up. He didn’t know what to do. Jim’s main companion was lost in the forest and he had no way to find him. Jim ran back to his castle as fast as he could and told his advisors. They decided to put out a reward for finding Jim’s dog, and they had a holiday made specifically so everyone could go search in the woods. Jim pleaded to everyone in the kingdom to find his dog, but after a whole week of searching, no sign had been found. Jim was devastated. He sat in his room and cried for a whole day. Just when he was about to give up hope, a letter arrived from the king in the next kingdom over, who was an old friend of Jim’s. The letter said that he heard Jim lost his dog, and he wanted to help him find it. He said that he thought Jim’s dog may have run into the forest that separated the two kingdoms. He said that they could go there together and look. Jim thought that was a great idea.
