The JSEC
The Ateneo offers their entrepreneurial-oriented students a place where you can take part in a rare opportunity to set up your very own business establishment. This place is called the John Gokongwei School of Management Student Enterprise Center, or most commonly known as, the JSEC. However, only a few students are chosen to participate in this challenge. It’s a gritty process wherein you have to generate unique and non-mainstream proposals; because there are plenty of applicants and only 19 will be chosen and you also have to get an approval by the Dean’s Office of the JGSOM. Also, Just like every other official business, you have to secure business permits, pay taxes and rent, and provide salary for your employees.

At first glance, JSEC looks just like every other university cafeteria with its general layout of different stalls sitting right next to each other, tables, and people. It seems like a regular food place where the students of the Ateneo regularly hang out. However, JSEC is not only a venue for great food choices; it’s also the home of the stereotypes. JSEC is stereotypically seen as the domain of the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM) majors; the arena of the future businessmen and businesswomen of our nation. They are regarded as the elitists and burgis; they rule the JSEC scene. And with the prevalence of SOM people in JSEC, the stereotypes attached to these students have also rubbed off to the place, pinning JSEC with its very own stereotypes. JSEC has become known to be the tambayan or hangout place of the ‘cool crowd’; therefore, earning the name: JSEC crowd. The JSEC crowd is where you will usually see boys who sport polo shirts or v-necks, chino shorts, and boat shoes; girls dressed in skater skirts or cropped tops; and groups of friends facing their branded devices. These people are dressed to impress and are seemingly ready to party: thus, giving birth to the JSEC outfit. And lastly, the thing that has become so famous

I enrolled in JROTC mostly because of my family. My dad was in the US Air Force and retired shortly after I was born, my oldest brother joined the US Navy about 2-3 years ago and my sister joined the early entry program for the US Navy and is going to boot camp in July, my brother was practically born to join the US Marines, and 3 of my 4 brothers have been or are in JROTC. It was only natural and the sane thing to do that I joined JROTC because we are practically a Military oriented family and I wouldn’t want it anyother way. I also thought it would be good for me because since this my first year in High School and that it would help me prioritize my work, help me find new friends, build my self-esteem, and learn how to become like my brothers. In my opinion my brothers are the very definition of leaders. Now that it is the end of the semester, my reasons of joining were proved right. I have become better at being a leader, I have made a bunch of friends, i’m more comfortable in the way I live my life and the things I do, and I know how to keep my grades up in High School, and even if I don’t I know how to try and keep them up. I love JROTC and there is no doubt in my mind that I will come back next…

Given that most universities I saw had Mandarin titles, I was startled when I saw one named after an American city. After some research and talk with local residents, I had realized the outstanding opportunities for global interaction students are receiving on campus. Interested in business myself, I was satisfied to know that Stern also offers these opportunities to students their junior year through the ISP program to gain a first-hand approach of learning international economies and trade. Because of this, Stern oversteps the boundaries of the traditional classroom setting. With Wall Street just a few turns away, students can also secure internships at some of the most world-renowned businesses. I hope to apply the global experience I earn to international marketing, and take the connections I make with me wherever I…

The most regretful thing in my undergraduate life is that I did not join or lead clubs as much as I did in my younger age. Thus, choosing the business school which emphasized on the self-competitive rather than inter-competitive, choosing the business school encouraging me be my self leader is my strong seeking. Fuqua has appealed me at every single dimension, from the flexible curriculum to the culture student-led of more than 42 clubs/ activities. Clearly, Fuqua is the perfect environment to fulfil the missing puzzle of my undergraduate. I look forward to taking full advantage of both professional and activity/ leisure areas at Fuqua.
