Intermediate sanctions are designed to give judges other sentencing options beside imprisonment or probation. These types of sanctions are less restrictive than imprisonment but more restrictive than probation. Intermediate sanctions are usually combined with imprisonment, probation, and each other.…
Intermediate sanctions; offers various different sentencing options to those in need of a more rigorous guidance than that of probation and less restrictive than incarceration and both being primary forms of punishment. The purpose for intermediate sanctions is to reduce the issues concerning overcrowded facilities and probation officers and offices short on staff. The options used for punishing criminals such as, fines, community service, restitution, forfeiture, and pretrial diversion program. The functioning of these sanctions are designed equal to the offenders offense in terms of punishment and treatment as well as other programs recommended to facilitate and improve one’s situation.…
Intermediate sanctions tend to overlap the issues that arise when a criminal is released back into society from incarceration. Most often, the offenders, once released, return back to prison within 1-5 years (Fagin, 265). The reasons vary, but most likely it’s because the offender has not had proper preparation on how to ease back into society after being locked up for so much time. Intermediate sanctions are criminal penalties that do not include jail time or probation. Rather, intermediate sanctions fall in the middle of these types of punishments and offer an alternative to them.…
To many Westerners, the overall plight of females in Iran appears tenuous. It is illegal for females above the age of 9 to appear in public with out their heads veiled and bodies entirely covered. Women cannot serve in certain occupations, such as the military. It is difficult for a married woman to divorce her spouse, yet for men the right to divorce is unquestioned and done with ease. Married women in Iran who wish to leave the country for any reason must first obtain the permission of their husbands.…
Our world today has changed drastically since the times of slavery and unequal treatment. Due to documents such as the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, everyone is now allowed freedom of religion, speech, and so on. However, there is still a controversial topic about a certain crowd of people going around media and our lives today. That group is the LGBT community. Over the past few years, they have been facing numerous amounts of hate and injustice. Some view them as perfectly acceptable in society because, after all, they are human just like the rest of the world. On the other hand, others see them as despicable and unworthy of living because of their homosexuality. There is a possible solution for those who are not fond of gays, lesbians, etc; that resolution is gay conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is a form of rehabilitation that is meant to treat one’s homosexuality through a series of sessions such as associating pain with being gay or degrading one’s self esteem through chastisement and degradation. This too, has also been very conflicting as most going through the therapy see it as painful and damaging, but are forced to because they are not accepted in society (mostly family and friends). Of course, the opposing viewpoint is that it is beneficial because of religious reasons. Although many have strong beliefs that gays should convert, the LGBT community should be granted the choice themselves to go through the conversion therapy procedure because it may cause serious psychological, emotional, and physical damage.…

I do think that the mandatory sentencing is one approach to solving the drug problem, but I do not think that it is the only one. It is clear that the sentencing works to a certain extent, but is not the right choice for every situation. Personally, I feel like this is a gray area due to the fact that mandatory sentencing gives definitive discipline to someone who broke the law. Where in specific cases that approach is too strict. Although I do not have a direct answer to solve this problem, I think that different variables should play into the sentencing.…
Religion is detrimental to the commonwealth. Throughout history, religion has influenced numerous governmental decisions, displacing individuals from the rest of society. According to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), seventy-five countries have criminal laws against sexual activity by lesbian, gay, transgender, or bisexual people. These countries enforce the death penalty or implement deportation. In other countries, gay and lesbians endure harassment and discrimination. In other words, homosexuals lack respect and treatment in all territories. In 2014, over 40% of the countries worldwide criminalized abortion. Other countries, such as the United States, allow abortion under certain circumstances.…
The dominant paradigm for gender relations in the United States has always been one of a heterosexual standpoint. “Measured against other Western democracies at the dawn of the twentieth century, the American state – slow to develop, small in size, and limited in capability – stood out as distinctive” (Canaday 1). Since the beginning of its establishment, the United States has taken a strong stance against homosexuality. One of the United States’ most evident characteristics that set it apart from other cultures was its harsh punishment on homosexual relationships. The harsh laws and regulations against homosexuals have not only continued to perpetuate the idea of a strictly heteronormative society, but…
Since the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the government of Iran has steadily offended the human rights of thousands of its fellow citizens. The victims of the system have consisted of a vast gathering of average Iranians, the only “crime” of which was usually one of identity – ethnicity , sexual orientation, religion or gender - that was a threat to the theocratic vision of the ruling elite of the country.…
Once the revolution to bring down the Shah began, which was followed by the Iran-Iraq war, the lives of Iranians were never the same again. Before these events, Iran appeared to be what we can easily call ‘a modern society’. Women were treated equally, men and women openly socialized together without any restrictions and westernization was apparent with the dressing styles of women, parties and the children indulging in pop culture. All of this drastically changed after the elections and once the war began. Under the new repressive government, religious extremists in power imposed several laws that undermined the freedom of all citizens of Iran.…
In this paper I am talking about Hate crimes against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. I show that though Hate crimes are classified as crimes that are evoked by sexual orientation, race, identity, gender, or religion. Hate crimes are more common amongst the gay and transgender men. I show states with highest conviction rate in 2012. I also show the upward incline in numbers since 2005 until now. I offer explanations as to who commits these crimes and why. Lastly I show the progression of time and how prejudice and hate crimes although upward in numbers are really being accepted in our communities.…
Thesis Statement: The Gay Rights Movement dates back to the 19th century. By 1970 gay and lesbian organizations existed all over the United States and in other countries all over the world. Some supporters of the movement would say that our society as a whole has made great strides towards acceptance of homosexuality. However, gays and lesbians are still fighting for equality in 2009. The issues are vast and widespread, with same-sex marriage at the top of the list. In the world that we live in today one might be surprised to learn how many countries are accepting of gay and lesbians, as well as how many are not. The world has made progress within the last decade regarding this issue, but definitely not enough. We need to take steps to protect and balance Gay rights.…
