The Introductory Paragraph On Abortion
The introductory paragraph has to be interesting enough to convince the reader to continue reading while also stating some of the main points of the essay. It is just as important as the thesis statement. Much like the thesis statement, the introductory paragraph sets the tone and the reader’s frame of mind for the essay. The introductory paragraph should to support the thesis statement and vice-versa. It need to be well thought out and complement the essay. For this reason, it isn’t uncommon for schools to teach children to write the introduction last. There isn’t a correct length for an introductory paragraph. As previously stated, it should complement the essay and therefore can be as short or long as the author deems necessary. Paul H. Rubin provides a great example: “Many …show more content…
But there is another sense in which environmentalism is becoming more and more like a religion: It provides its adherents with an identity” (Rubin 338). In two sentences, Rubin clearly states the topic, sets the tone, and grabs the reader’s attention. The topic could be considered controversial, but not so much so that people are instantly turned away or already have their opinions set in stone. Topics like these that are semi-controversial should have no problem hooking the reader. Most people either don’t have their minds made up or could easily be swayed to the opposite side of the argument. The paragraph provides points, such as having creation stories and ideas of original sin, that can be expanded on and used as points of an argument later in the essay. Two well written sentences are all that was needed for this essay. Since the introductory paragraph is the reader’s first impression, a paragraph that is poorly written, too long, or too short could turn the reader away.
