The Interlopers Short Story

The Necklace and Interlopers are two very well written short stories. In the Necklace, Mathilde desires more in her life. In Interlopers, Georg and Ulrich desire a piece of land and more importantly revenge. Both of these short stories characters are unhappy about their life, but when they try to fix it they cause even bigger problems. If you were never happy for what you had, and always wanted more, you would live your life like Mathilde. In the Necklace, Mathilde was a young woman whose life was great. She had a loving husband, a house, clothes, and food to eat. But in Mathieu’s eyes she had nothing, and needed more. In the beginning of the story, Mathides’s husband got her an invitation to a ball, in hopes of her becoming happy. Instead
Ulrich and Georg, the two opposing men, go into the forest to kill one another. When they come face to face in the wooded area a tree falls on them. As they are trapped they begin to talk, and later decide to end the long lasting feud. Shadows appear in the distance and the two men are overcome with joy that they would be saved. Once the shadows got closer they could tell that they belonged to wolves, and not people. The Interlopers theme is to forgive and not hold grudges against people. The Necklace’s theme is to be thankful for what you have. Although these short stories have very different themes, they have a lot in common. Both the Interlopers and the Necklace’s main characters seek more in their lives. In the Interlopers the two feuding family’s wish for more land; and in the, “Necklace,” Mathilde desires for extravagant goods and a rich life. These characters are similar in the way that they want more and don’t realize what they have is good. Short stories are easy to read over a small period of time. They can talk about a variety of things such as love, friendship, death, and even murder. Whatever the problem may be, there is always a moral to the story.
