The Interlopers

“The Interlopers” by H.H. Munro is a plausible story to which many can relate to, or will be able to at some point in life. The two main characters, Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym, were neighbours for years and who had hate in their family for generations. “Nature’s own violence overwhelmed them both” (p. 34), describes how a tree came to fall on them both, while they were ready to harm or kill one other with guns in hand. It is ironic that as they were both in such a hateful state that they would be stopped from hurting one another by having a falling tree land on both of them. While they were lying there helpless and full of hate for each other, Ulrich decides that he is ready to let his hate go and extends an invitation to Georg to put their differences aside and be friends. At first Georg resists his neighbour’s offer but after reflecting says, “I never thought to have wanted to do other than hate you all my life, but I think I have changed my mind about things too, this last half hour”(p. 36). In the moment that Georg had almost given up hope, he decided to call a truce and become friends with Ulrich. In order for differences to be resolved, one person has to take a big step towards forgiveness to make it happen. It is plausible that in their moment of despair, they could decide to end their tiring feud and forgive one another. It is also ironic that right after they decided to be friends, that they were not going to be rescued from their plight, but instead would be eaten by hungry wolves.

After getting stuck under the tree Ulrich pulls his flask of wine from his coat, then in a surprise gesture he says to Georg, “‘could you reach this flask if I threw it over to you?’” (726). He shows a exceptionaly distinct change to the feeling towards Georg, traditionally most would not drink first-class wine with their enemies. By doing this it shows that Ulrich is warming up to Georg bringing them closer to one another. I’ve never been much of an outdoors person, the outdoors scare me, I don’t like bugs, or the dark. I would have never have been caught in the woods after dark the way Ulrich and Georg were. In the story “Interlopers” by Saki, two men, Ulrich and Georg, had a long existing argument over land owned by Ulrich; one night they encountered each other in the woods with the idea to kill one another, ironically, a beech tree had fallen on the men leaving them to struggle until they were found. While struggling to live the men decided that their feud was irrelevant and ended it, they called aloud for help but what came wasn’t what they hoped for, the responders were wolves. The story is still popular today because the conflict is relatable, the irony and suspense was interesting, and mood fit in well with the story.…

In the story “The Stranger” by Albert Camus, the belief that the themes of loss and retrieval are at the core of Mersault’s mythology, and that they illumine the notion of exile to which he returns so often is widely discussed. I however do not believe that either one of those themes has anything to do with the Mersault and the exile to which he returns to so often, rather I believe that Mersault’s own attitude is the reason for the exile he experiences in the story.…

He didn’t think the reports were real, just made up nonsense from crazy scientists who didn’t get enough sun. Geoff Sanders was one of those guys who didn’t care about important issues such as the presidential election or a cure for cancer. All Geoff cared about was his income and when he was going to have enough money to buy that new BMW he had been dreaming about. Well, that wasn’t going to happen now. He was on his way home from work when he saw some men in grey morph suits with body armour chest plates over the top and elongated heads. Geoff just thought it was Halloween or one of those stupid dress up days, god there’s so many of them now. Geoff felt a cold metal-feeling point touch his back. He then went to turn around and see what it was when the foot long serrated blade of the knife was plunged into his back and burst out of the front of his chest with a sickling splat and a gush of dark red blood. The last thing Geoff Sanders saw was a man with a stupid smile on his elongated face in a grey morph suit with a chest plate over the top and a very bloody knife in his hand. The thing is they weren’t men in morph suits; they were aliens.…
