Bovée and William F. Arens discuss the criticisms of advertising. The article informs the reader about the effects of how different advertising schemes affect our minds psychologically and make us too materialistic. The concepts of advertisement are under heavy condemnation and are being described as insidious and annoying according to Bovée.

Social criticism of advertising plays an immense role in the disapproval of advertisement. When a company first begins to advertise, it opens itself up to not only new customers, but criticism as well. Unnecessary

Our views are swayed to thinking that we need more material things in our lives to be happy. Advertising influences us to buy more by promising a greater status in the world, which is rarely the case. Critics say that advertising does not promote enough cultural and spiritual values. Advertising takes its defense by claiming that without its effects, the educational and cultural events such as books, operas, and musical events would not be as successful without proper promotion. Women argue that some advertisements do not recognize that they are not being included into our society. This is not particular to only women 's rights groups but also in groups against racial and ethnic bias, animal abuse, and other issues. Even after advertisers being told that their advertisements were not open-minded, the efforts of these groups have had little effect.

The truth behind a company 's product could remain hidden from the public. The advertisements may be misleading and deceptive. Critics believe that if a company is unrepresentative of its product, a loyal consumer may become an adversary to the company. Advertisers are not afraid to admit that the power of advertisement has been misused over the years but they claim they are not the ones to be blamed.

Advertising has very much become a part of our lives. With the market glutted with endless brands of products, the consumer is influenced largely by advertising in his decision- making process. The industry too leans very heavily on advertising to survive in the ruthlessly competitive market. Advertising is a measure of the growth of civilisation and an indication of the striving of the human race for betterment and perfection. Advertising has both forward and backward linkages in the process of satisfaction across the entire spectrum of needs. The explicit function of advertising is to make potential audience aware of the existence of the product, service or idea which would help them fulfil their felt needs and spell out the differential benefits in a competitive situation. On advertising also lies the onus, at least marginally, of motivating prospects to strive for creation of resources for fulfilling the new needs or to aid reallocation of available resources. Advertising is not merely directed at…
