Summary and Response Assignment
The Importance of Writing Badly This short story is by Bruce Ballenger. Bruce is a teacher a college and talks about how some student have a hard time writing. He talks about how a lot of people criticize the students about writing. One example is how he hears the doctor, his colleagues, commentators on the radio, and strangers talk about how students abuse the sacred language, and how after 4 years of high school many students still can't write. There is a big reason why students are like this. The reason is because when they all started writing the were graded harshly or terrorized with notes on the margin of there paper. That makes many students scared of expressing there writing but Bruce found a way to let them write badly and help them from there to fix there errors and become better. So I personally believe that having a harsh- terrorizing teacher will never help a student to become a better writer. The way that the professor let his students write badly and help them from there was good. I know that I like to write and write and then after go to the teacher and ask what I did wrong. It also helps with writing stories. The way it helps is because you can write a story and get it revised and check many times before you do the final copy. In my on opinion I think that not only do students abuse the “sacred language” but everyone abuses it whether they know it or not. I also think that many students are scared to fail. Many people expect on to be good in english and writing and everyone is scared of failure. So I believe that it's okay to write badly to succeed.

Chris Street wrote the article, “A Reluctant Writer’s Entry into a Community of Writers.” In Street’s introduction, he describes how he had a student named John who seemed angry, and didn’t seem to like writing. Finally, Street decided to change his ways of teaching his class. He began to let his students talk about what they cared about and what they knew, while he listened. This began to change his students writing.…

There are many essays throughout the text of Writing About Writing, which discuss writing in a particular way. In chapter two, Maria P. Rey writes a letter to her high school criticizing their teaching strategies. The rules her previous professors had restricted her with often times caused writers block. Mike Rose, a student at the University of California, found that “ students who experienced blocking were all operating either with writing rules or… strategies that impeded rather than enhanced the composing process” (272). Rose’s research supports the dilemma of Maria’s writers block. Students do not intentionally produce poor papers. Rather it is the stress they experience along with…

The Wichita Kid from “The Gunfighter” by Alden Nowlan and a young man living on the streets of Calgary both demonstrate that we fear what we do not understand. Citizens need to personally comprehend someones situation before they can help or judge them directly. Homelessness and poverty are often hard situations to face considering how uncomfortable and awkward it can become. When Kevin O’Brien has a short conversation with Wichita he learns that he is unaware of reality and living his delusional life as a famous gunfighter. Confused and not understanding Wichita’s situation, Kevin tries to solve his own guilt by lending the young boy some spare change. Much like Kevin O’Brien when I encountered the young unfortunate man in Calgary my own heart ached, so I tossed him a couple of loonies and left. Although you feel major misery there is rarely anything you can do to support them without getting deeply involved.…

Thesis: Although the United States of America has branched away to form their own government system, a group of parties seem to develop over time. The Federalist Party, who is proudly run by Hamilton, and the Democratic-Republican, who is run by Jefferson, both use ways to indulge themselves in making the United States a much better place to live compared to what they use to live under England’s rule.…

Personally, I believe that I need guidance in the basics of writing: organizing, grammar, editing, etc. In high school, I met a variety of English teachers. My ninth grade English teacher was mostly a supervisor because she would first hand out magazines then make us summarize what we read. I can understand why she was not interested in attempting to teach the class, one reason was because she was getting ready to retire that semester. The second reason why she had no interest was due to the classroom environment which was chaos. My tenth grade English class was pathetic. The instructor was a man who only sat in his chair and used Facebook everyday to chat with his at-home “child”, who then I found that his “child” was an eighteen year old girl who obsessed over vampires. This instructor also accepted cultural foods as bribery to raise your grade. This was pathetic because all you had to do was attend to pass the class! Now these people with degrees probably once felt a passion for teaching and expected to teach excelling students and this was not the case for either of my past…

No offense, but ELA has never been my favorite subject. It requires creativity, a characteristic I lack. In fact, it took me a week to conquer up this anecdote’s topic. I haven’t always been this way, but as you will read, numerous habits have restricted my ability to be imaginative, and taken a toll on my writing.…

In his essay, “The Importance of Writing Badly,” Bruce Ballenger encourages students to write freely and to not worry about finding the “perfect way of saying it.” I feel by saying this he means to not worry about what you’re writing and it may not necessarily be perfect, but that you write what you are thinking and continue writing even if it’s bad or may not make sense. He means to put all your thoughts down on paper and start from there. Ballenger gives his students permission to write badly. He expresses that “when the writing stops, so does the thinking.” He also states that he is far more interested in encouraging thinking than error-free sentences and concise, clear writing.…

My writing history is all over the place. I took Honors English my eleventh grade year, and loved it but took AP English my senior year and hated it. Mr. Palmer, who taught honors, was my favorite English teacher. He let us write about whatever came to mind on Fridays, whether we were ranting about classes or just had a fun story to tell. My favorite part about him is that he actually taught me how to write. My AP teacher did not improve our writing but only critiqued it. In my opinion, you can always learn how to write better. Even with being in AP I wish she fixed my writing more than just giving me a grade. More than half our students failed the English exam and the national average was a 2 on a scale of 5. So, within the past year writing…

This was the first time a teacher of mine had given me a push to do better than I was doing. Unlike the teachers that I had had before at my private school, she seemed to know that I could do better than I was actually doing. She explained and offered to me suggestions to my writing errors that I had made. In that time, I had discovered that I was a weak writer, I had lacked basic writing skills that were expected out of freshmen high schoolers. I then found out that I was struggling because Mrs. Short wasn’t walking me through every step of my paper, she was doing this to prepare us students for college.…

As I moved to a new country it became even more difficult for me to write because it was in a different language and a different alphabet. I moved from Ethiopia when I was twelve years old and was enrolled in middle school right away. As panicked as I was the first day of class I was more frightened of what was to come. Every time my English teacher gave us a writing assignment I used to say I can’t do it and always use the excuse that I was from another country. Ms. Rodriguez came to me one day and told me that by saying I can’t I am making myself weak. I need to get up and start to do the stuff she has been teaching us. That comment really upset me, How could she say that to me? I just came to this country and I do not know anything. The next day she gave me a journal, she told me to write everything down. Each day at the end of the day to write what happened to me. I was so upset at her I did not even open the journal. Day after day she asked if I started to write in my journal. I was so tired of the excuses I made for me not doing anything, so I started to write in my…
