The Importance Of Volunteering In America
Donating, giving, and sharing are three related values that the majority of households in America all claim to practice and believe in. If this is true, then why is it so often that charities are underfunded? The problem is that many people seek happiness for themselves over the happiness of others. I believe that this is natural in human beings. When we are already so busy taking care of ourselves, I think we forget that other people could use a hand as well. Another underlying factor may be that many of us are not raised around charity. Instead of volunteering at shelters, America’s youth is often found at sports practices or at home fidgeting with technology, and until recently, I was no different.
Tuesday, December the eighth, I had my first experience volunteering. As an active member of Webster County High School’s Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) club, I decided that I would leave archery practice a few minutes early and head towards the Providence Food Bank. Every second Tuesday of each month, HOSA meets at the food bank at five-thirty to help prepare senior citizen boxes and assist people in shopping at the food bank. Intrigued by the opportunity to gain a few bonus points and support the club that I am passionate about, I figured why not give it a

Before, I was all about myself, I knew what I needed and knew what to do to get what I needed. But since I have had this experience I have decided that giving is the life for me. I now see that I am not the only person in the world that has needs, and I am also not the only person in the world who struggles to meet said needs. And I believe that if I lead the rest of my life giving, I could inspire someone else to give, too. Luther was all it took to start the peasant revolt. That alone is enough proof that if one mind changes, several will follow after it. If we all become giving citizens maybe we can all find our inner

Emily Andrews argues in her essay “Why I Don’t Spare “Spare Change”” that it does more harm than good to give money to beggars on the street rather than giving to an organization such as United Way to help the needy, pointing out that “one cannot be certain that one is giving to a needy individual” and that by giving to a charitable organization “ones money is likely to be used wisely.”…

In the article “The Singer Solution to World Poverty” by Peter Singer advocates for Americans to donate more to charities to help world poverty. That we are not giving enough. The issue we encounter is we do not see these poor kids in other countries at a personal level. They are just a picture on a website. Thus, we are not able to put ourselves in their shoes. Without that empathy connection, we will not see the need to give. Peter Singer believes Americans have plenty to give. That we should be donating one-fifth of our salaries to the charity organization. Yet, many of us don’t. All it would take to donate is a change our lifestyle spending habits. Only buying things we need to survive, and not purchasing items we can live without. Like, the new tv Dora wanted in his…

America has given me the gift of giving. I believe that we can lead the way with irrational generosity because it is truly more blessed to give than it is to receive.- Life.church. There are the commercials, movies, and TV shows about great people and what they did to strengthen our nation. We witness the outcome of what they did, then we move on. Simple as that. We don’t sit and ponder the things we could do. Steve Maraboli once said that…

In this era of political mistrust, division and controversy I sought to volunteer in an impartial organization that works for the benefit of the entire community. The American Red Cross organization relies on the power of volunteers and the altruistic nature of supporters. It warms my soul to interact with donors, ensure that their experience is positive, and listen the stories that motivated them to come in at 7:30 AM on a Saturday morning to give blood. It amazes me how some have benefitted from blood donation in one way or another, while many others, just want to help the community. Their stories have transformed me into an every fifty-six day donor.…

Through my experiences in DECA, I have developed many short term and long term goals that I'm determined to reach. These goals of mine are seemingly straight forward, such as graduating college with a 4.0 GPA and applying my knowledge of business to a profession that I have great passion for. Once I have reached these goals, in order for me to continue my road to success, I must give. When people hear the word "give", they tend to think of physical things such as money. My plan is to give much more than material objects to those in need, but rather build emotional relationships along the way. I have a great passion for making a difference in others lives and I've put much effort into doing so emotionally, but if I can build my wealth to a point…

I believe that giving is the quintessential to living. Giving for me is like taking a breath of air, or the automatic beating of my heart. Giving to others gives me a feeling of happiness such as the sight of a rainbow, the sound of the waves crashing on shore or a clear night when you can see all of the stars. It is about making a difference in the life of someone that I may know well or someone that I just met for the first time. The rewards of giving are abundant and immeasurable, in my opinion. Giving can be as simple as a heartfelt smile or as complex as unconditional love. There are many different ways that I give of my love, time and even money.…

    Volunteering

“Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote goodness or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. There is no financial gain involved for the individual. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun.” Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community. When helping less fortunate people it makes you appreciate and allows you not to take for granted the little things that you possess. For instance, water, food, a home, and clothes, I would even go as far to say under-garments such as t-shirts and socks, are valued by those who are less privileged and can’t even afford to get those bare necessities. When a person volunteers to a specific service without getting paid the rewards are endless. I can not speak for others but, putting a smile on some ones face due to my actions is better than any minimum wage check. I believe everyone should at least volunteer one time in their life. There are many services that one can do .It does not only have to involve giving away food. It can be volunteering at a shelter, a church, possibly a hospital. You don’t even always have to go to another place to volunteer. An easy way that a lot of people don’t think about is, when you see someone in need of someone to talk to, be that ear or be that friend. You are volunteering to be a support system to do this and the effects of this could be great and long lasting. This was not my very first time volunteering. The very first time I volunteered was when I was a sophomore in high school. My elementary school put together a popcorn stand where we passed out bags of popcorn to the children. I was not prepared for what was going to happen. My mother actually tricked me and told me that she had a job for me where I would get paid. At this time I was just a young kid just to make a…

“To show great love for God and our neighbor we need not do great things. It is how much love we put in the doing that makes our offering something beautiful for God.” (Mother Teresa) Mother Teresa is correct in saying that love makes all the difference in our conscious doing. The more love a person provides towards a good deed will make the deed more beautiful and will exemplify correct volunteerism. In one perspective of volunteerism, volunteerism can consist of service to the community, service to people in need, and service to humanity. Volunteerism is an important part of American life because it provides needed social development through interactions with other volunteers, it gives people a sense of self-satisfaction, and it improves our community.…

There are two kinds of people in this world: the givers and the takers. Some people were born lacking confidence to do anything, so they rely on others most of the time. Some, on the other hand, take charge and chances. These types of people are willing to do anything to make the world a better place. Most of them gave up their time doing charity work, providing services for others, and wanting nothing back in return. There are many ways in helping others which can be classified into three fields of charity work: donation, volunteering, and giving advice.…

What is more, all that charity things are useful not only for people who get it, but also for ones who provide it. While contributing you can get much more utilities than it seemed at first. It is said: “giving is receiving“ and it really is. While giving you can receive much in emotional way. Afterwards, I was reminded of what President Kennedy said in his inauguration speech January 20, 1961, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. We all have something that we can share or do for a worthy cause. Giving is not hard and can be very rewarding. Currently, I work for your public television and radio stations here in Killeen, organizations that rely on the generosity of the public. Like other non-profits nationwide, we have seen fewer donations in the last year and have felt the pinch. In fact, a country is measured by the way it treats those most in need. Therefore, we all should be giving something to a cause we feel is worthy, be it money, things or time. Tonight, I’m going to spell out the problem charities face right now, then tell you what caused the problem and finally let you know how you can help and be part of the solution.…
