The Importance Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition
The Lewis and Clark expedition was important and one of the most recognised trips into the western United States in the 1800s. This expedition was one of the most recognised because it was a very large purchase, a big and long trip, and was very important in the future of the United States and future expeditions. The purchase of the Louisiana territory was very important in the expansion of the United States. The purchase expanded the size of the United States to almost double its size. The president Thomas Jefferson bought the land from France for 15 million dollars. Napoleon needed money for a upcoming war with Great Britain so he sold the land to the United States. Napoleon also hoped that by selling the land to the United States it would challenge the control of Great Britain in Northern America. France was going to war with Great Britain and hoped they would get mad at the United States and France could side with the States and get help in the war. The expedition made very many friendships with the natives and only a few enemies on the trip. Unfortunately the expedition could not befriend the most important of the tribes because they did not have much to offer them. Lewis had spent weeks before the trip studying plants and many of the adventures kept journals on what they saw. The expedition did not find the water way they were looking for but did find out many other useful things about the western United States. The Lewis and Clark expedition played a very important role in the expanding of the United States.
